I have no problem with people coming to america from other countries as long as they do it legally. but i would have to say that my biggest gripe is the whole "you dont have to speak english to be in america" bullsh*t. im sorry but we dont defend america from people that want to see us to our graves just to have a group of foreigners (legal or illegal) come here, get a house, drivers liscence, job etc and not speak a lick of english. for gods sake its what they teach us in school. im sure that if you go to russia or china or anywhere in the world where english isnt a major language they would expect you to learn their language as well. i just hate how we have to please everyone by giving them translators and crap. sorry but if you dont understand english, you better learn quick or get the hell out now.

Celtic made a good point far below me. Adults have less of a capacity for learning something such as a language. That area of development in the brain deteriorates with age. So it may take longer or be nearly impossible for one to learn a complex language like English. This situation can however be stressful occasionally.

No Hablo Engles?

I've always said that, if you're going to live in America, you need to learn our main language.
I bet you anything that France doesn't put five different languages on their box of tampons.
English may not be the official language but it's the most commonly used and main language of the country. If I went to live in Mexico or France or Italy, I would expect I'd need to learn their native language.
The feminine products I have only has two (English/French) and occaisionally Spanish. Which is a bit bizarre, seeing as I live in Seattle, and here the main language is English, but there are a lot of immigrants that speak Russian, Spanish and Japanese. I can't understand the Japanese accents at all, but I can totally understand the Russian accents, and usually the Spanish ones, but it can be a bit of a challenge at times.
Just because nobody understands you, that doesn't mean you're artistic.

Yeah. I wasn't really paying attention to it, so I can see how I thought it was something else. My apologies.

Hmm, seems I interpreted that commercial wrong. But I wasn't generalizing. I was merely pointing out that while some immigrants expect everyone to speak their language when they move here, some Americans do the same elsewhere. Americans are not guilt-free.

Haha, real funny. Don't quit your day job, pantera. Reactionary, I don't know anyone personally, but I have heard stories (not widely publicized stories, but true stories nonetheless) about some rich American tourist who goes to Spain, sits down at a restaurant, and tries to order something, but the waiter doesn't speak English. So the tourist gets mad about people not speaking English like they should, yada yada. Don't tell me you haven't seen that commercial...?

as long as they at least try to learn english i dont care. But people who come here with so much pride about their own country that they think that everyone else should learn THEIR language instead of them learning english. And try and force their cultures on us, those are the people i disagree with.

Well it wouldn't hurt to try to learn English. But it's not like tons of other countries don't have more than one national language.

quote: When you say dialects and mention Jamacia, India and Canada, you mean accents. That is people who speak Hindi trying to speak English.
its not necessarily about ppl trying to speak hinglish as a mix of hindi and english is reffered to... its not only about diffrent accent but it is somewhat diff where words are concerned to...infact some dialects are diff languages by themselves......
