I'm anti-sports, but not for the reason that everyone else is.
I just hate sports.

what are you talking about??? sports isnt that pointless!!!if sports r pointless, then tv show r so much more pointless.....
reasons of for sports: 1. it entertains 2. it promotes good health 3. it promotes good values likes sportmanship, accepting failure, striving, cooperation, teamwork, etc.. 4. the talent are important ofcourse, it helps people have more talents.. 5. actually, it helps not only the sports industry but the country itself makes money and gets promoted
and besides, not because someone doesn't hav education, it already means he cant make a living out of his talents right?

All sports should be in the ameture category. No one should be able to make a living at a sport. Then the true athletes who love the game would be the only ones who play. I basing this idea on the best sport, curling.

I agree with stillbornfetus. Eventhough I enjoy playing sports, it's very annoying seeing rich atheletes complaining about not having enough money, while people are starving around the world! I don't care whether or not the people are faithful or whatever else! Until they do something worthwhile, shut up and let me watch them play! (That last sentenced was focused to the media).

the only good sport is mtn biking. my dad used to race until he almost killed himself. its still the best sport. all the rest are pointless wastes so the couch companies can get millions off of lazy a$$es doing nothing else but watching that stupid box.
heh, my brother saw a t-shirt: "if you learned to twist instead of stroke, you could have been a motorcross champion"

i definitely think that athletes are paid too much, and should perhaps be involved with something a little more important than just scoring a goal. but you also cant say that ALL of them arent doing anything except running around after a ball. some prolly are doing something more beneficial to the world.
also, i like sports, i like to play some and watch some. it provides entertainment for society, clean entertainment minus the childish fights that break out sometimes. and i dont think that we should look at someone who is talented and loves what they do, and say 'well, so what? who cares if you can run this fast or hit a ball this far?' cuz that really sucks for them. theyre doing what they do because they enjoy it, dont overlook their talents, they deserve some kudos for it. its like if i went after an artist and said 'i dont care that you can use colors well.'

I know of a basketball team in the US auctioning off an autographed ball to raise money for autism awareness. Nascar was doing something big a while ago. A baseball team (Yankees) are having a huge awareness day (Wow, now that I think of it...it's tonight. Wish I were in NY.) to raise money.

I think the industry had kind of gotten crazy, yes. i love sports, and it's a great thing to do. But i think that more players should be encouraged to make charities and stuff, that way their money IS doing some good. (some people have already done so). But you know. Some people arent very nice. on the topic of welfare (i just saw in mentioned), that system needs redoing as well -rito

I also live right near Cleveland. I learned not to get my hopes up for any Cleveland team long ago. LeBron James should be castrated. I was sick of him after the 1st week of hype. Now I'm stuck with it for years. Castrate the stupid ****. His unemployed mother on wellfare buys the asshat a Hummer for his birthday. Then he procedes to run over an old lady. But we don't care, because he is an athlete! If I want to watch basketball, I'll drive down to the ghetto wearing some kevlar, and watch the game. And for added pleasure, I get to watch people get shot after throwing an elbow 1 too many times! NBA refs are such *******, only throwing a jackass out. SHOOT THE *******!
Why are sports so important? Look at which sports are entertaining to Americans. Soccer isn't. It is slow paced, and there isn't much scoring. Baseball, as the outfield walls are slowly moved in, there are more homeruns, and more scoring. 50 years ago, 500 feet for the Center field wall was considered normal, if not a bit small. Now, 400 feet with a low wall is normal. Americans have a low attention span. Sports provide entertainment and a distraction from life.
Tax the players? Sure. They really don't need all the money they are making. They're getting it for playing a game you and I played when we were 12...a game we played for free. Sure we're paying for their skill, but $50 for a nosebleed seat is too much. Especially since it all goes to the owners.
DesertEagle: They do NOT go on wellfare. Depending on how famous they were they either work at McDonalds or endorse Athlete's Foot Spray.

StillbornFetus, I think you've hit the nail on the head. The only point of sports is distracting the masses. I think we should have sports, but they certainly should'nt be taking up TV space. Ane the few athletes they do have should be ONLY the best of the best. If people spent the billions of year they do on athlestes on other things, we'd all live in a better world. Athletes have nothing but their bodies to support them, and what happens after their bodies give out? They star sucking money through welfare. Thank you again for your insightful post StillbornFetus.

It certainly doesn't make sense. I want the money to go back to the people for what's truly needed. Healthcare, government funding, public services, etc.

is that from what i think it is from... what a hilarious movie that was... mmm yes? lol
i think that schools and scientific organizations should receive tons more government funding. nasa is greatly underfunded (then again they are in a bit of a rut). teachers and scientists are some of the most underpaid ppl in the world. entertainment is great and all but doesn't it make sense to make the most important ppl in the world (scientists and teachers in my mind) the most highly paid?

There are too many idiots in this world, however, to make a massive movement against sports. If it were possible to get more people to see how inane it really is, then it'd start to have a real impact. But, the only thing we can do for now is wait as it slowly declines and wait for a moment when the industry screw itself in someway (It's inevitable) and then strike. Heavy taxing on the athelets would only be for the money spent on sports going back to the people. It would contribute a LOT.

Hey, Stillbornfetus! I agree with MOST of your post, and disagree with the last point you made. Lemme start with why I agree. First off, I definitely agree that the sports industry has gone overboard. Two points. Number one, it's sad to see just *how much* it's about money. Now don't get me wrong-- money is important; helps pay the bills. However, I think that when the ONLY-- and I mean ONLY-- reason you're playing sports is for the $$$, it cheapens it. For example-- I live near Cleveland, so naturally my favorite team would be the Cleveland Indians. Ohhhhh, man . . .how I remember 5 years ago, when the Indians had such a great team-- we had awesome players. And it was a TEAM-- meaning there was a sense of togetherness, bonding, like-- both wiht other teammates, and the fans. How I loved rooting for that team all those years ago--it was a true adrenaline rush. Now, though, the Indians have gone down the tubes. And the reason why, is that the great players we had-- Thome, Justice, etc., have all left for other teams. This leads to less name-recognition of the players. As a result, people lose interest. I mean, I understand rooting for a team, but I refuse to merely root for the NAME-- no . . . I want to root for the PLAYERS. And when you hardly know any of them anymore, well . . .you really do lose interest. Most people have, around my town. Second point, is how much we have sports shoved down our throat. If you thought hearing about LeBron James day in and day out was bad, imagine living near the same TOWN where he came from! It's ALL the newspapers and media seem to report on! It's nonstop. And it's getting old. Yes, LeBron is great. However, he's NOT the ONLY teen out there doing something great! In fact, there ARE other teens who are doing far, far greater things-- like actually giving of themselves and contributing to society. As for the part I don't agree on, I disagree that we should heavily tax athletes. Number one, it would be wrong, and two, it STILL wouldn't solve anything. As much as we like to complain about how sports are being shoved down our throats, these athletes DO put in the time and energy and effort. And we STILL end up tuning into the games on TV, or actually attending. The BEST way, I think, to curb this dilema would be to "vote with our feet," or via the almighty dollar. Personally, I think we are having *some* impact on the sports industry. They know something's up . .attendance at sporting events all around has decreased . . .as well as viewership. So that's the best way, I think. Well, that's my two cents. Heh.
