A few decades ago, I belive, we sent a probe out with drawings of both a man and a woman. We tried to explain that we were here, etc., etc. If aliens ever find that, it could be interesting. I think it was called something like the Jupiter or Saturn Probe or something.

Also the chances of us ever being able to traverse the infinate distances of space to a point where we find a planet with intelligent life, of which there is a tiny tiny chance...are very small indeed and probably unlikely within the time frames of our survival as a species.

Interestingly though, astronauts would have to breed on their ships in order to reach anywhere, and when they did its debatable whether they would want to keep in touch with Earth, afterall it took a meagre few generations for the American colonies to declare their independance and seperate nationalities...the same thing would ultimately happen with any colonisers into space...

finding and dealing with aliens is another matter, although we'd all like to think its true :-D but heres a question, who would be the 1st to speak to them, and greet them? who would represent humanity? Kofi Annan? he'd probably try to give them some food for oil and pocket the difference, Mr. Bush? he'd probably offer them the choice of democracy or destruction, I think its best they don't come, so we are not faced with the embaressment of explaining to them our current situation here on little Earth..

Right, HL. It's very possible that this life could be something we've never thought of as life. Perhaps these aliens (As in many sci-fi movies) are shape shifters. But of course, that's way too predictable.

I'm sure that there's SOMETHING out there but part of the problem is that space is way to big for us to search every bit of it and we really don't know all the forms that life can take. It's hard for us to search for something when we don't know what we're looking for.

This is how logical the whole face on Mars thing is.

There is a set of mountains here called Las Tetas de Cayey. What do they resemble? Female breasts (hence the name "tetas"). Does this mean anything? No. It means they are mountains that look like breasts.

There is also another set of mountains that looks like a sleeping giant. Is it a sleeping giant? No. It's a set of densely-forested mountains.

It's true humans do try to see faces. It's like seeing shapes in the clouds, or in bushes, or the "man in the moon". Primarily i think it's a simple pattern recognition response, but it might have something to do with our fear of being alone too (we can make crude faces on dolls and cuddle up to them to keep us feeling safe as children).

Thank you 4thname, that was what I was trying to say.

a simple explanation for that is that human minds can't comprehend our existence. This is the single greatest piece of evidence in the world....if god doesn't exist, how come the Earth and everything on it is here? because our brains are too small and primitive to comprehend or understand/work out the truth.

Aliens on the other hand are very comprehendable.

Oh geez...

Amazing how humans love to think there is life in another galaxy but utterly refuse to fix their own existance.

And that quote, "If we are alone... seems like an aweful waste of space." Was first said (or at least popularized) by Carl Sagan, via his book/movie "Contact".

interstellar relations would definitly raise some interesting questions. For example would the world unite under one bannor faced with the threat of an alien world? who would be our representative to them? can you imagine mr bush being the 1st human they met?

'hello! heh heh, i'm the president of the United States of the World, and if you don't give us Bin Laden we will oblitirify you! heh heh heh'

Actually, I read a study one time that said that for some reason humans "want" to see human features in things like shadows and stuff...it was a cool article, what I remember of it.

Yeah read something like that too but it was very self contradictory . Said something like Humans are either terrified of being alone or are brave enough to accept the fact that they are'nt alone.

Oh please people...I'm sure that out there somewhere there "aliens" of some sort but the faces that people see on various planets or moons are caused by natural features and shadows. Actually, I read a study one time that said that for some reason humans "want" to see human features in things like shadows and stuff...it was a cool article, what I remember of it.
