if any of you have read Alaska magazine recently you may have seen a letter from some woman who doesnt even live in Alaska saying that all of our wolves should be exterminated. its really upsetting that people think this way.

to me, the wolf represents the greatness of america, just like all of the american wildlife. from the deer to the eagle.

why would someone want to eliminate part of america?

I totally agree with ya, icm91. The more we destroy the environment, the more we're hurting ourselves.

I don't think that it's right for wolves to be killed for absolutely no reason. We may wipe them out totally from the face of the earth. Another species of animals gone, just like so many b4. As for the ranchers, they were encroaching on the lands of the wild, so they should've known that there would be wild animals on it. So they should learn how to deal with it.

These people who put the economy and material goods before the environment are reckless, stupid, and shortsighted. Without the earth and the environment, we have nothing. Every forest cut down and every species lost is a stab in the back of humanity. We need them more than they need us.

there are unknown diseases in the tropical rainforests that we are cutting down. thats how Ebola became so widespread so quickly in Africa a while ago. we went further into places we shouldnt have gone. now we have so many new deadly diseases its a shame.

"actually the Earth can help itself. the more we bulldoze into forests the more diseases we uncover. we are a cancer the earth is trying to control."
huh?
i know the earth can help itself, but only so fast, it takes time to reverse drastic effects. and why did you contradict your stanse with the last two sentances. what do you mean we uncover more disease? what the... i do agree that one way to desribe humanity is to call it a cancer.

Oh, and if you haven't read it, I would suggest you buy a copy of Nicholas Evans' "The Loop" because it is a great book and it deals with the problem of wolves. Very sad, though. Halfway through the book, I had to resist the urge to tear the pages out because I was just so angry about their treatment of the animals.

Wolves are my absolute favorite animal. They are so beautiful and majestic. They only do what they have to do to survive and they were there first. You are encroaching on their territory so you should expect for them to show their disapproval.

here is the way i see it.. i think if a rancher see some wolves killing a cow they should shoot them... BUT they should not just start shooting wolves because some killed their cow.. how do they know it was that/those wolves that did the killing? not all packs turn to domestic animals.. also it was the ranchers that moved onto the wolf's land not the other way around so i say thay should have to deal with it... also they do not loose a lot of money.. if they call the proper people and show evidence that the animal was killed by wild animals, they can write it off on their taxes....

also maybe they should read up on the dingo fence?? better fences = safer cows...

Just to play the antagonist for a second I should let you know that they kill numerous cows. The ranchers complaint is certainly vaild as they lose large amounts of money when these animals die.

well Hank, looks like we'll finaly have to build us some fences that wolves can't jump over!!!

wolves are native to the continent, so we should leave them be. we need to stop interfering with the delicate ecosystems. it's bad enough how we cut down the forests and pollute the air and water. nature can't deal with such violent changes.

I love wolves. What, just because a wolf came and killed a chicken or two, everyone wants to go on a massive hunt to kill all wolves? And that lady you're talking about, she didn't live in Alaska? If she lived nowhere near wolves, she shouldn't judge them. And I agree with BillyBarrio, the ranchers could do more to protect their livestock if they are in a wolf-populated area. I mean, if you know that you have livestock and you live around wolves, you should know that your livestock needs protection, right? If you don't protect them from wolves when you are practically surrounded by them, if one kills them, then you brought it upon yourself!

Wolves kick ***, people just get mad because the family cat or something got eaten....and well it's tough, but that's life.

I think I agree with Jookly, ranchers should be able to defend their land, but they shouldn't be able to go on mass wolf hunts and trap them like in the past.

An I'm sure those ranchers can build better fences also....

well we kill and eat their food and we kill and eat cows, chickens, pigs, and turkeys. but we get mad when they take our livestock, even though we are the reason they are killing livestock in the first place.

up here biologists have brought the caribou population up quite a bit in the past few years and the wolves dont need to go anywhere near us. so that could be the problem down there.

and that person's reason for wolf extermination is this: "Wolves to me are the North American hyena. They kill in packs and take down small, young, helpless animals."

not very educated if you ask me.

Well the guy in the magazine probably stated his own reasons and I dont know the situation in Alaska but I do know the situation here in Montana.

Side A of the argument: Wolves are cool animals and should live. Simple.

Side B of the argument: The ranchers here get pissed off when wolves kill their cows, so they kill the wolves. Then the wolves became endangered and we started trying to repopulate the area. This was about 8 years ago i think, now the population is high enough to take them off the endangered species list, BUT, now the wolves are starting to kill the cows again!

My oppinion is to let the wolves do whatever they want, but then you have to let the ranchers do whatever they want........ I dont know if the issue will ever be solved.
