if you want to make a nation a friend you have to offer to work with that nation as an ally in this apparent war world. if it were me id make that ally disarm all weapons and war like things and be concerned with developing free power away from burning fossil fuels. war is someelses its not ours were just caught up in it. nations need to question there governments there polices and all the constituent party members that work with them. the banking institutions need a full work over to. as money is getting in the way of any unity with nations with these apparent loans that need paying.

I agree with Chaos in that the unfortunate reality is that most ties between nations are created by greed or pre-disposed closeness. Military and Economics are the biggest influence of international relations between nations.

I'd say that sports unite countries in a small way. Things like the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup may not work on the order of international trade, but they do give nations a common interest to share.

The only way to develop relations between two countries that last, are: 1. Economic 2. Military 3. Regional These are the only three really long lasting ties. Economic is something like the United States and Canada. The United States and Canada both cater to each other; the United States with manufactured goods, and Canada with natural resources. Military is when you seen troops or arms to help out other countries. The United States and France have been military allies since the revolutionary war, especially after World War II. (The Iraq war being the exception) Finally, regional is the one we're most familiar with. The United States and Canada are both allies, as they're both right next to each other. Germany and Austria are traditional allies, right next to each other. Russia and the Eastern-Bloc countries, once again, right next to each other. To build up relations, you either need trade or arms. Music and sports usually don't build solidarity.

I think that right now, it's probably only business because our president isn't so much concerned about... fill in what you want, as much as he is concerned about money.
