The info I posted was copied and pasted so if some of it seems repetitive, don't blame me. If you want to eat hot dogs that have pig snouts and the meat around pigs feet in them, go ahead. By the way IT'S BOTH.
quote:
Do you have any agriculture classes at your highschool?
I'm homeschooled.
Let me give you an example of desertification, my family has horses and we let them out in a pasture a few times a week. We let 6 out of our 7 out in the pasture. (because one is a stallion and would start fights and try to get with the mares if you know what I mean) The pasture used to be all green, now the front of it is all dry dirt. and the only plants that grow in abundance there are weeds. That's what desertification is.
The reason that the manure is bad for the environment is because most of it is not used for fertilizer but is washed in to huge pits, and if those pits overflow (from a lot of rain for instance) the manure can get into drinking water or into rivers and streams. The sierra club, the union for concerned scientists and the audubon society all recognize that raising animals for food is the worst thing we do to the planet. Look at these links, www.hogwatch.org www.earthsave.org www.factoryfarm.org www.sierraclub.org/cafos/factsheet.asp www.eatinganimals.com http://www.earthsave.org/environment/foodchoices.htm Didn't you look at the links I provided? (the environment ones)
I know that there are cattle ranchers that treat their cattle and their land right (the family farmers), but those farmers are quickly becoming an endangered species. Corparate owned farms are becoming more and more common, and they're making family farms go bankrupt or they buy them out.
And slaughterhouses my be the worst workplaces in the U.S. The workers are poor, often illiterate, and often unable to speak english. They are treated almost as callously as the animals dying by the billions in those same facilities. The pay is low, turnover is high, and injuries and illnesses are frequent and often severe. (workers get their fingers, limbs and even their heads chopped off by machinery or knives, most of these injuries are from cattle slaughter) Turnover rate at all processing plants runs close to 100% per year.
quote:
I'm all for the animals, really. But weren't certain animals such as chicken and hogs created to eat? That's why they're so darn tastey, I believe.

You know, Alice Walker once said, "the animals of the world exist for their own reasons. they were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men." And I think that animals were created to be our friends. Why do you think that God (making an assumpion that you believe in God that is) would create a thinking feeling creature just so it can die? And if you want to give me some asinine statement such as "if God didn't want us to eat animals, why are they made of meat?" I'm way ahead of you, MEAT IS MUSCULE!!! it was created to help the animals move, not to be eaten. You have meat on you too you know! Go to this website on religion and compassion toward animals: www.all-creatures.org

I have a question, so when the hamburger meat turns green from the dye is it still safe to eat? Ive had this happen to me a couple times, but I still didnt eat it, because something about eating green meat turns me off.

I hate seafood and bird

but I do like beef and lamb, bacon is pretty good too.

I guess you're all just a bunch of meat-eating cavemen and women.

Cavemen probably ate more plants. They were easier to catch.
quote:
Hamburgers are made with the unusable, worst leftovers of the slaughterhouse…much of which comes right off the floor. Any meat “part” that cannot be sold on its own merit is ground up and used for burger. This includes hooves, bone, snout, ears and other animal parts.

Hot dogs are made with the unusable, worst leftovers of the slaughterhouse…much of which comes right off the floor. Any meat “part” that cannot be sold on its own merit is ground up and used for hot dogs. This includes hooves, bone, snout, ears, beak, claw and other animal parts.

One or the other, honey. Which one is it going to be?
quote:
Ground beef is more likely to harbor life-threatening E-coli than any other food.

If cooked properly, it shouldn't be a problem.

On March 20th I'm eating a big steak, and someone else is going to eat some form of animal product too. You can't do anything about it, so deal with it.

Good for you. I'm going to go to Fuddrucker's and order a 2 lb. hamburger. I'll bring most of it home, but it's the thought that counts.

If I could take back the things I said I would. (you can only edit posts 15 minutes after you post them) The website where I got those facts from was not an animal rights website. Here look at it www.fitamericamd.com it's far from it. BTW earthgoddess, meat is very bad for the environment, dairy farms produce more, let's say manure, than most large cities. And eating beef contributes to desertification of land, making the soil inhospitible for plants. http://www.goveg.com/feat/enviro.html http://www.madcowboy.com/01_FactsENV.000.html BTW the guy who started the mad cowboy site used to be a cattle rancher, so he knows what he's talking about.
Sorry about any hurt feelings everybody.

Grrr....screw you guys. I thought somebody here would be positive about this but I guess you're all just a bunch of meat-eating cavemen and women. Sorry I'm just really p***ed off. Maybe you don't know how that meat gets to your plate.

^That article is about the hazards of America's 10 most popular foods. Look at what is says about hamburger:
Considered a “high risk” food because of the poor heath standards under which they are manufactured.

• The time consuming process for making processed meats creates high bacteria counts and putrefaction of the meat which need to be treated with chemicals.

• Putrefaction causes meat to turn green which is then dyed with red chemicals to appear fresh. Unless marked otherwise, hamburger will always contain red dyes.

• Hamburgers are made with the unusable, worst leftovers of the slaughterhouse…much of which comes right off the floor. Any meat “part” that cannot be sold on its own merit is ground up and used for burger. This includes hooves, bone, snout, ears and other animal parts.

• Because burger parts all come from the animal, “pure beef” can be used on the label!

• The beef industry is the largest user of antiobiotics in the world to offset the dangerous bacteria housed in its meats. This has resulted in America’s growing resistance to antibiotics.

• Ground beef is more likely to harbor life-threatening E-coli than any other food.

And here's what it says about hot dogs:
• Hot dogs are made with the unusable, worst leftovers of the slaughterhouse…much of which comes right off the floor. Any meat “part” that cannot be sold on its own merit is ground up and used for hot dogs. This includes hooves, bone, snout, ears, beak, claw and other animal parts.

Hot dogs have nitrites which are thought to cause stomach cancer, leukemia, brain tumors, and bladder cancer.

And earthgoddess, you make it sound like all vegetarians eat are vegetables. Do some research before you make a conclusion about something.

I've decided that on March 21st, I will hold the Great American Meat-In.

On the 21st, everyone should eat meat, because it is wonderful. If you want to go back to being a vegetarian on the 22nd, fine. But on the 21st, you should eat meat.

I hate vegetables, so why can't vegetarians try meat for a day? It only seems fair.
