GUESS WHAT GUYS??? I was looking at my ethnic background, and I bet you couldn't find that many other people out there who are exactly: 38%English, 51%Irish, 3%Welsh, 3&French, 3%German, and 2%Scottish. Except maybe my twin sister. Skin color aside, I think that this is a pretty amazing acheivment that i had no control over and i will most definately use it to get money for college and countless other things. exciting, no?

**Note to reader: this post is pretty much a joke, but a little bit serious regarding the fact that i am angered by affirmative action and all the race arguments on this site right now.

Oh I wasn't saying Affirmative Action is good or bad, and I wasn't saying that minorites aren't intelligent enough to get into good schools and I wasn't saying that addmissions offices admit ONLY white people on purpose... I was simply saying that the majority of students at prestigous schools are white and wealthy and WHAT DOES THAT MEAN and why is it like that and shouldn't we change it?

What I am getting at is that, ultimately race is a SOCIAL CONSTRUCT, which means that it is basically something that is in everyone's heads. Research has shown that in the end, we all come from the same ansecstors and in a sense are all related and all from the same origins, and so althought yes skin color is varied throughout humans, RACE is a social construct. And since it is, why is there still such division and unequality in our society?

I'm very sorry Aguagon, but I think to say that "most people are taking great pains to not be racist" is not very accurate. Did you know that in the 2000 election Bush denied over 2,000 former inmates the right to vote even after they had been out of prison for quite some time? And what do you know but nearly all of these people were African-American males! And Surprise surprise 9 out of 10 of these Floridian African-Americas were democrats, therefore Bush eliminated some of his opponents support.

And why is it that every SINGLE American President has been a white male? And why is the House of Representatives not an accurate representation of the American Population? Why is racial profiling so prevalent in modern day America? (sometimes as many as 70% of people randomly pulled over are African-American)

Racism is such a huge problem. What should we do about it?

I don't think anything I've ever read better exemplifies the racism within affirmative action than this quote. I understand that your intent was to say that Caucasians are a lot more likely than minorities to come from wealthy backgrounds and thus get into the best colleges, but your statements could also be interpreted as a snide quip about minorities' intelligence.

Even though racism (and sexism, for that matter) is still rampant in this country, I think the best way to combat it is to aggressively fight the notions of racism and sexism themselves rather than trying to pull these elaborate "balancing acts." Like Kat said, very few college admission officials would deny minorities admission simply because they were minorities. Racism does still exist, but at this point, I think most people are taking great pains to not be racist.

Affirmative action just reinforces racism. It says to the world, "These minorities weren't qualified enough to get in on their own, but we let them in anyway because they're minorities and they need this leg up to intellectually compete." This problem is one that has to gradually correct itself.

Activistista, do you honestly think the reason those schools are filled mostly with whites is because the people in charge of admissions are intentionally denying minorities? Since Affirmative Action was eliminated in many states, race is now not even a factor in admissions, and yet your numbers for minorities in prestigious colleges stand.
Just FYI: The University of California system is 30% Asian.

I've worked my butt off in high school, and so have many of my minority classmates. We are equal in every way. That is how colleges should judge students, not by race. It shouldn't a deterrent to me that because there is racism in the world, people who have not worked as hard as me should get into a college instead of me, regardless of their race.

Although people of caucasian descent sometimes feel the opposite end of anti-racism actions, in reality there is so much racism and oppression within society that often goes un noticed, that it is vital we are constantly discussing race for it is such a prominent problem in our society. But I gotcha. And the Visigoths (with their German allies) sacked Rome about 300 years after the beginning of the decline of real, imperial Rome.

Yes, The Romans. The Picts(idiginous to the British Isles, fought with no clothes, painted themselves blue to frighten enemy hence pict from latin picti, picture) and the Celts forced the Romans off of the islands in about 270A.D. Do you know why Hadrian's Wall was built? To keep out the Gael/Celts. It didn't work.
Also, some German tribes(I think the Vandals and Visigoths, I'm not sure) Burned Rome

..When did any of those people whip the Romans? The English, maybe (the early early English before they became an imperialistic empire) but not the Romans.

Well this is a pitty party if I ever saw one. Yeah, I'll probably get less jobs or scholorships or whatever, but hey I'm Scottish,(I play the bagpipes,no, really!) Irish, German and Native American, and I kick a, so I'm proud.
I can say that my ancestors wipped the Romans and the English, what not a lot of people can say. But oh well, I don't get to use my fighting skills in USA.
