I must argue that you'll be hard-pressed to find a completely original philosopher. All philosophy is based upon other works of philosophy - it's like a tree that branches out.

1. Very simply here ethic system, universal ethical egoism, can very easily be seen as faulty, with a simple prisoner’s dilemma. 2. The fact that the women thought she was an "original" with her "philosophy," shows this women didn't understand philosophy as well as she thought. She was not the first to push universal ethical egoism, nor will she be last. I'll get to her Introduction to Objectivist "Epistemology" later.

Finally, someone I can have an intellectual conversation with.
djmagnusa - So you admit it yourself but what were your REASONS for ayn rand being a nutcase? I sure you have quite a few too because you don't seem like someone who would make statements withour having support to back them up.

quote: But did you understand them?
I know where your leading with this question, very simply you are trying to back me in a corner, like most objectivists; what a surprise !!! The nature of this "question" is unfair because I’m in a no win situation here and that is your intentions. If I say yes, you will undoubtedly say "well obviously you don't because you think she is a nutcase." And of course I'm not going to say no, why would I even engage in this conversation if I didn't believe I understood her works. So if you want to play hard ball, do you understand her works and what evidence do you have to support such a claim of understanding? Ultimately the only thing I can say is yes and you have to take my word for it or else what is the point of engaging in this discussion, let alone asking the question.

"A very poor philosopher I might add, it was very evident the women had a distinct lack of knowledge in the field of philsophy; an area she claimed to be an expert in. "
Please give specific examples of her "poor philosophy."
"I've read almost all her books"
But did you understand them?

quote: magnus, you're a bleeding heart liberal, so of course you'll find Rand a nutcase.
You just shot yourself in the foot right here, if we were solely going by political alignment, of course you wouldn't find here works to be illogical and therefore nether of our claims would be of any merit; only a centrist could make a valid claim. quote: I'm no expert in philosophy or Ayn Rand, but the literature and notes I do have on her completely smack your nutcase claim.
Again, I have just about every written work by Rand and I still hold to the claim that the woman was a nutcase. quote: In no reply do you even try to validate your argument against her.
Sure I did, read it again. quote: Her mantra is pro-capitalism and pro-individual. I'm not exactly sure how you could describe a champion of freedom as a nutcase; then again, I'm more extreme than many in topics on freedom,
When you said "then again, I'm more extreme than many in topics on freedom" basically sums how I can say a "champion of freedom" is a nutcase; my own personal perspective on freedom. quote: but I can at least provide budget/finance information when arguing against socialism/communism.
This still doesn't necessarily make your views ethically correct, or fundamentally correct. This would only support certain views one holds on a fiscal level. Whether Rand's philosophy is right on fiscal level is moot, because I believe Ayn Rand is wrong in the classical 5 areas of philosophy metaphysics, Aesthetics, Epistemology, Ethics, and Logic. If you want in area where Rand is pretty much destroyed, look into the materialist philosophy. In particular materialism provides a death blow arguments against Ayn Rands idea of the "tabula rasa" mind.

It's also worth noting that Rand did not align herself whatsoever with the Libertarian Party, despite the party's roots in her Objectivist philosophy. It's a shame she's an atheist, letting all that brilliant work go to hell. But eh. Nothing you can do now I guess. Anyway, I'm a Libertarian/Republican. All of you might already know that. Doesn't hurt to reiterate, I guess. http://www.lp.orghttp://www.rlc.orghttp://www.libertarianrock.comhttp://www.garynolan.comhttp://www.rlctexas.org

quote: She was a philosopher
A very poor philosopher I might add, it was very evident the women had a distinct lack of knowledge in the field of philsophy; an area she claimed to be an expert in. Most major Philsophy professors, who supprot different schools of thought from Idealism to Materialism, believe this women knew very little about philsophy. Mein Kampf was inspirational to some, whats your point? Just because it's "inspirational," that does not make it necessarily good. quote: and her work was very inspirational.
And this validates her writings how? Just because it's "inspirational," that does not make it necessarily good or correct. quote: Don't be too quick too judge - friendly advice.
I'm not being quick to judge, I've read almost all her books, so I'm entitled to make a judgement on this women.

I'm not registerd under a particular party because my political views are mixed. I guess I could be classed as a libertarian but most of them are anarcho-capitalists and are consistantly qouting Ayn Rand, so thats why I dont assoiciate with them. The best area to classify my views under would be left-liberal, or left-libertatian. But I will vote for the Democrats out of necessity, due to certain issues.

Also, a note of advice:
If you live in a closed primary state, do not register Independent. If you do you will then be unable to vote in any primary elections.
(a little off topic, but I was still thinking about Independent not being a party, so that came to mind)
