Sure, for the people who could afford to pay a private school tuition, that would work fine. But one of the things Americans like to forget is that we have many people living in poverity. It hardly seems fair to say "some of us who can afford it get a great education, sucks to be the rest of you."

It must be lovely to wake up in the morning and understand everything.

Simple we don't have a right to a free education, you want to pay teachers better? privatize and do so, wanna improve education standards? privatize and do so. The goverment can't provide a good education it's the goverment. So we privatize the whole thing and charge tuition. To keep costs down the goverment provides tuition assitance.

I know this thank you very much but patriotism dosen't have to be at the cost of arrogance

The DE has never had billions, it has always gotten the budgetary equivlent of an F-15 fighter jet

this isn't about education, at no point in my school life was i told that Iran speaks a persian dialect, no...it is common knowledge through understanding of the world around you. This was the quote of a university student, this person got into university only to utter this.

Actually, amp, few people here think of Americans as rich.

Puerto Rican stereotypes of Americans:
- rednecks
- horny bastards and whore girls
- every girl in the US fakes being a lesbian
- idiots
- uneducated
- ignorant
- can't locate their own country on a map
- lives off frozen food and fast food
- fat
- arrogant
- think they own the planet
- overly cruel yet good at hiding it (this we think because we have plenty reasons to do so) I guess this is the one ALL Puerto Ricans agree on
- pretend to be religious but are immoral
- selfish
- cold
- cooks horribly unless it's on a grill
- kills deer and hangs them on walls

Of course, American stereotypes here vary according to what political party you're in, because those in the PNP (i.e: the local Idiot Money-Stealing Political Party see the US as the lord and saviour, but that's not the majority, and people are quickly leaving that party for corruption reasons).

just something i wanted to mention, the mindset is totally different in the US, everything is loud, brass and coarse. For example when Bush makes a speech in Europe he often pauses after delivering yet another 'we'll end terrorism!' line, and waits for applause, which is usually intense from Americans, yet the rest of the world sits buy and waits for him to say something relevent and meaningful, and the applause never comes. Politics is showbiz in America and thats something which causes a negative image.

I have experianced many Americans recently and this same attitude permeats everything they do, from the loud obnoxious cheers of 'yeahhh!' to the down-right boring chant of 'USA! yeah we rule!', it is just old boring pointless and annoying. It is this attitude and stereotype which pops into peoples minds when they think of Americans and the one they have to dispell as fast as possible.

Another is common lack of knowledge regarding international affairs as highlighted before, how many Americans who debate the complexities of the Iraq issue really know the history of the region? of course most people on here do, but it was to my great dissapointment to hear some various comments from American students at my university ranging from: 'is there a war going on in cyprus!?' to 'what language to theys peak in Iran? islamic or something?'. Shocking.

What do people think about Americans? That's always a question that's fascinated me, and as a result I have been looking at stereotypes attached to different countries for years.

According to wikipedia.org, common American sterotypes are obese, ignorant, pushy, aggressive, not afraid of bellicose solutions to international problems no matter how minor they are, and/or arrogant, indifferent towards international affairs. Also seen as conservative to a fault. Many international films tend to swirl American cultural stereotypes into one. A flaky, Valley Girl type American stereotype would often be portrayed wearing a cowboy hat or a New York Yankees baseball cap(Those stereotypes would be better fitting Easterners or Southwesterners)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_stereotypes

My personal opinion is based on several Americans i've actually met and not those of rumours and stereotypes. I ecspeically disbelieve the ones posted above.

It is my opinion that Americans are proud and extremely patriotic, to the point where it maybe becomes a little excessive or arrogant.
No offense.

Lots of Americans i've met also, ecspecially ones on here, tend to be very degrading and rude to others. I know that not all Americans are like this and i would love to see those who are not take a stand in this forum. Let people see what the real people of the U.S are like.

Anyways this is a very interesting thread. I'll be sure to keep checking back.
