In trying to devise an updated Bio for my website, I came across the question, "Why am I even here"? In other words, why were you put on earth, what is your purpose in this life? Well, I wanted to poll YouthNOISE, and see what they have to say. Seriously, why are you even here? Do you know why? Do you know why God put you here? What is your reason for living on earth? And especially, I want to hear from people like geminiangel, not to rag, but to just get another perspective. Why do you think you're here, gemini? For someone who does not have a god, do you just exist and die, and that's it? This would make for a great dialogue, to just see where everyone is going, so to speak. My answer will be the basis of my Bio, but while we're at it, let's just see everyone's confession

Our purpose, technically, is to reproduce. Even though that is more true, it is more fun to have another purpose. I have all sorts of other plans for life, but in the grand scheme of things, they will proove irrelevant.

Also, I think that this is one of those questions that a person can never really have the answer to. I mean you can speculate and have your opinions about it. Why did god put us here? No one knows why God does anything (unless it is written in the Bible) because a person can never really understand all of what he does. God is so all-knowing and almighty that a person can never understand him. This is one of those questions that you can't get a true answer to until you come face to face with God in heaven.

I am a christian and I think that we are here to serve God and live a christian life before we are called to heaven. Maybe, (by my christian view) we are here so we can be given a choice to whether we want eternal life with Jesus or eternal damnation in hell. I don't know. It is just a thought.

That's pretty cool, actually. Heh, I just saw it at Wal Mart and picked it up...nothing exciting about that.

The speaker at a church retreat that I was at mentioned it, and then when I got home, my mom had already bought it, even though she didn't know that he had talked about it. So I figured God must be calling me to read that book.

Just that no one else close to my age has read it, and it doesn't seem your type of book, for some reason. Love, Jen.

Well, I haven't read all of it. I'm on chapter 11 or so. Why would you be surprised? (No offense taken.)

Why are we even here ??? i am an hindu and in my religion people believe that u come down to planet earth on basis of your last lifes karma...(bad mostly). if u have an okay life, it means u have a considerable amount of good karma.... some people even say that in heaven we are given a choice about coming to earth and it is we who decide.. the above 2 statements are really contradictory, so i can't make up my mind which one is more convincing... i myself wonder about why we are here and slightly off topic but there is another question which puzzles me and its 'WHO AM I ????'

A good life is a relative term so that doesn't work here. Also some people get happiness from discussing the origins of the Universe and studying Science, so how does your philosophy fit into this then? I'm sorry Poncho but I see this as a philosophy to try and promote ignorance and laziness on a certain level; it seems like an excuse system for ignorance. What I really believe people are saying when they say this is “I don’t understand some of the science or the logic, so therefore that makes it irrelevant.”

i think i agree with Poncho. we shouldnt care why we are here. why waste the little time that we have here trying to figure out why? becuase, personally, this kind of thing just gives me a headache. i think that we should spend less time thinking about why we are here, and more time enjoying it. you only live once, i know i want to try to make it worth while. man, that sounds cheesy.

My philosophy is this: We will never know why we are here. We will never know the origin of the universe. Do we need to? No. Go live a good life. Be happy.

Well, since you asked... I think I am here on Earth, breathing, living, learning, etc. because I make the choice to be. My parents made the choice to have children and to raise a family, because families are (generally) institutions of happiness. They create an atmosphere of well-being. In an ideal society, which is the state we all strive so hard to be in, we'd all work together promoting the well-being of the individuals in the community. I'm "here" today because I can help to proliferate the lives of others in some way or another. I am able to learn, love, and reproduce, all in benefit of my happiness and/or the happiness of others. I do not believe that people were created so some god could be amused, or to enjoy his/her creation develop solely to decide who deserves to get into Heaven, and who is kicked into the bowels of Hell. That's a nice fairy tale, but I grew out of it. The goal of species is to reproduce; natural selection, if you will. Everything else is what you make of it.

well, i have NO idea:-D. but my teacher says he"knows" y we are here. but he wont tell us untill the end of the year, an he doesnt give us time 2 ask questions. i hate teachers. but back on the subjust. i think i read that same CS Lewis thing, that G-d doesn't control everything, but he gave us the power to make our own choices, so wars and bad things are because of things that people chose 2 do

Well, he (Nozick) also said that any being that could be considered God would have to have a direct role in the creation of humanity...even if he was much more powerful than any other being, if he didn't create us (or organize the creation) he couldn't be god. So not just any being could ascend to power...Also, one of his criteria was that no other being could EVER BE as powerful as god...but would that be God at the height of his power, or ever? Would a new God take over for the old one if he became weak? But that would eliminate the notion of god as unchanging... Is there any guarantee that the new god would be loving? Is the present one? For that matter, could the Bible have been written about a different god? Of course, if some of these things were true, he would no longer be the god of the bible...
