Actually, English is a nearly universal language because it is a trade language. And that's not our doing, either.

I'm not saying anyone is arrogant clpo. I'm just saying that I don't see the point in officially declaring the obvious. If it is for official matters like you say, then I'm not sure if I agree with that either. Its hard enough for people of another language to get their bearings in the United States, but when you take away other languages being printed on road signs, products, etc then that makes everyday life even more difficult for these people. Think about it. As an American, we can go pretty much anywhere in the country and see the English language printed everywhere. The fact that we can go to other countries where English is not the main language and see English on everything is pretty nice. Then we are going to turn around and take other spoken languages in our country off of these things and make it only English? It seems pretty hypocritical that we don't want to cater to other's needs, but we expect everyone else in the world to cater to ours.

So are Canadians' arrogant for declaring French and English their official languages? Last I checked, those aren't the only two languages spoken there either.

Official languages refer mostly to, surprise, official matters. By making English the national language, such things as ballots, road signs, job applications, and what not would not be required to print in multiple languages. Or something similar. I don't know the exact effects, but I know it wouldn't limit diversity at all. It's not a matter of speak English or get out. It's merely preferred that you know English in addition to any other languages, especially if you're living here.

I don't really see the point in any country having to officially declare a language. Its kind of obvious that Eglish is spoken the most, depending where you go of course. But, what does it matter whether or not we have an official language? Are people going to stop speaking different languages and just speak English? I personally like the diversity of languages. We are already ignorant and arrogant Americans who limit ourselves to one language already, officially declaring English as our language would just add to this perception.
