What do you think? I personally believe it's better for whoever it is to be locked up for the rest of their life with nothing to do, nothing new to think about except what they've done

well i go both ways with this subject, i go for it but then again i dont. there are people out there that would want to go to jail because they know they would have a bed and food and a shower(i know this because i have had a few people tell me) so in a way they would not really be suffering but then again they would have their hole life to think about what they did. now i dont like death penalty because yes there are innocent people who get it which is very wrong, and yes in a way it is murder authorized by the government or the state or whoever.

I agree that they should not have it and the person should just be locked up for the rest of their life

I don't like killing or death. I don't beleive that anyone should be killed, especially since there are a number of accused who are innocent. What if they find out the day after they've killed someone that they have the wrong guy. Its not like if they were in jail, they can't go "ooops, we made a mistake, lets release him", no, dead is dead. Plus, there are many criminals who are not afraid of death, so it would not be as much of a punishment as a lifetime in jail.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Its just as bad to go "he killed that person, so now lets kill him". If you do that, you are just as bad as the criminal, becuase now you BOTH commited murder.

Yes the John Walsh "victims" rights speech would be all fine and dandy if our justice system was perfect, but that is hardly the case. 1 out of every 8 death row inmates is innocent. This is hardly a sign of a perfect system, let alone a system that should even have the right give out such punishment.

Living in Texas, I'm quite used to the death penalty, but I am also very much against it. There is a high possibility of error in murder trials and no one can possibly be happy when an innocent person dies. If an innocent person is given a life sentence, there is still a chance that they could prove their innocence in an appeal. I think it is worth the extra prison expences to keep even one innocent person alive with the hope of being set free.

the death penalty just doesnt make sence 2 me. i mean, ok, person 2 killed person 1. well maybe person 1 did something really horrible to person 2, maybe not. maybe even person 1 tried to kill person 2, but failed. so if then the judge says'lets kill person 2!', i mean its not gonna bring person 1 back. and then the judge/executioner/jury(whoever u wanna think of as actually killing person 2) kills person 2. so then the judge/executioner etc. has killed someone. even if its 4 a 'good reason', its still murder. so then shouldnt they b killed, 2?
and so i think that just prison 4 life is so much better, because then, ok, if u wanna see person 2 suffer...how do you think he/she feels, stuck in a prison for the rest of his/her life, and probly feeling very guilty, 2. For person 2, thats worse than the death sentence.

I'd rather die after 15 years then live 80 locked up I can hardly stand my life as the average student hvaing to go from school to home never getting to travel. I mean, my brother's going to CHINA! My dad gets to go to and from Mexico every few months and might get to go to PAKISTAN!!!!!!!! I'm the one who's dying to go somewhere I've never seen another country before and I'm the one who's trapped, who can't get out who can't get free and I am going scatty. *inhales* did i say all that on a death penalty post?

I support the death penalty. Think about it. The murderer is allowed to live while the victim is dead. I don't think that's fair. I thought the justice system was supposed to be helping the victim. But by letting the murderer live and get stuck in a cell for the rest of his/her life is, in my opinion, favoring the murderer by not letting him die for what he did.
bootlog, i agree, it might be creepy and all wierd but if that person killed somebody, I would consider it justice to see a murderer killed. And about the innocent people, there are some risks but that doesn't mean that we should not do it.

I live in a country without the death penalty (England), and I agree with what you're saying. I don't really care what happens to truly evil people, but to have a death penalty means there is room for mistakes, and the use of it in America has proved on later investigation that there have been mistakes. Wrong convictions occur, and innocent men should not be killed. Besides which, it feels very ugly to me, the authorised killing of people, for whatever reason. They can't damage society when they're locked up, so execution is really unnecessary. As long as they lead a hard and unrewarding existence as punishment for the serious crimes, that's enough.
The only argument for the death penalty I can sympathise with is the families of murder victims might have more peace of mind if the person who killed the victim is dead and not just locked away. But overall, it's just not worth it.

No offense, but I think that's living in fantasy land. Most of these people honestly don't care; they feel no absolutely no remorse (especially sociopaths, who by their definition have absolutely no conscience) and sometimes even continue to work with organized crime or form gangs while in jail. Don't leave them in their cells if they're sane, force them to work long hours for no pay around their prison. That would save money for tax payers, and it would be poetic justice. I do oppose most executions though, simply because they're costly, sometimes kill innocent people, and in my opinion often don't punish criminals enough. The only people I think should be executed are terrorists, drug lords, and spies (who clearly are threatening our country and need to be dealt with appropriately).
