What are opinions on Lincoln? PS The person who killed Lincoln was part of a group that tried to kill other important goverment officials that same night.

Morally, Lincoln thought that slavery was wrong, but he understood that politically he could not end slavery right away. quote: he did things like placing Kentucky under marshall law, suspended the writ of habeus corpus, and arrested members of the Maryland state legislature.
All of which were necessary to prevent more states from seceding from the union. quote: If a president tried to do those things today he would probably be deposed.

Maybe his actions weren't all great, but overall his presidency left a lasting good impression. Lincoln obviously did what he felt was neccessary. The world was a different place when Lincoln was president so i don't think those things you mentioned were such a big deal. Its not that he wasn't trying to end slavery. I don't think that he was a great president because he did things like placing Kentucky under marshall law, suspended the writ of habeus corpus, and arrested members of the Maryland state legislature. If a president tried to do those things today he would probably be deposed.

So what if Lincoln wasn't all gung-ho about ending slavery? Does that automatically make him a bad person? I think unifying a country torn apart by war is a noble deed, enough to make Lincoln a great president.

Lincoln was not as good a president as he is made out to be. Lincoln did invade his own country and did not focus on ending the conflict as quickly as he could. Lincoln said "I care not for the negro." he wasent the hero he is made out to be. Lincoln however played the secession issue well. He declared in an insurrection not a war. If he had declared war other countries could have aided the confederacy. What many dont know is that the civil war was NOT about slavery. Slavery was a dying practice by then becuase it was too expensive. After the battle of 1st mannasses the confederacy could have ended it right there by proceding to washington, threating to lay siege to the city and sue for peace. Either outcome it would be about the same today because both countires would have had to merge eventually.
The original draft of The Lord of the Rings featured Chuck Norris instead of Frodo Baggins. It was only 5 pages long, as Chuck roundhouse-kicked Sauron's ass halfway through the first chapter.

Anyway... I think Lincoln wasn't as great as history pritays him. If you look at it, the emmancipation Proclimation didn't really free the slaves (Just the in the states that considered themselves another country and completely ignored W#ashington's laws.) He placed Kentucky under Martial Law, suspended the writ of habeus corpus and arrested members of the Maryland Legislature. Oh and Lincoln didn't want to free the slaves he wanted to contain it to the placess it already exsisted. I mean he did do good things, its just that he wasn't as amazing as history books tells us he is...
