So this thread has been here for like... forever, and I've never posted here because I had no idea who Andrew Jackson was, other than that he was a president. But for the past week in history we've been learning about him, and he was a total jerk. Seriously. It pisses me off, becuase I always thought historical people like that were good, but then I learn about him and it's like "ASSHOLE ALERT!" Like the Supreme Court (which is supposed to be the highest court in the land according to the constitution) made rulings about stuff and Andrew Jackson didn't even care; he just cared about what he wanted, and he was biased against everybody and incredibly selfish. And then he made all the Native Americans leave with the Indian Removal Act, even though they were here first. And even when the Cherokees tried to help him fight the Creeks, he was a total jerk to them too. Completely unnecessary. And I think he declared war on a bank too, which is a stupid idea.. who would want to declare war on a bank anyways? Oh boo hoo, the bank likes rich people... let's declare war! And then when he messed up the bank, he messed up the WHOLE economy and that Martin Van Buren guy had to suffer for it. And then he kept only letting people be in government who liked him, which messed up the balance of power or whatever (that's the Spoils System thing, right?). And then people liked him anyways. Ughhh.. I hope he suffered for being such a loser.

And I would never feel pain / and never be without pleasure, ever, again / and if the reign stops, and everything's dry, he would cry just so I could drink the tears from his eyes...

I laughed for like ten minutes. Thanks.

The trail of tears was Jacksons bidding. Not exactly the Emancipation Proclamation or crossing the Delaware. Come to think of it, it's not even Watergate.

What are you referring to when you say the modern democracy of the people. You mean the "majority" of Americans being white, land-owning men? Everyone else didn't really have any business being in politics..least of all the Native Americans that were forced off their lands. Yea, great impression.

Andrew Jackson gave rise to the modern "democracy of the people" Before hand the majority of Americans dissassociated themselves with politics. Disagree with his policies though you might, he did leave a beneficial impression on American politics.

Jackson was an utterly awful president, a loathsome, violent redneck--but he was certainly a very influential politician. He was a man of the people, although that says more about the people than it does about him. He was one of the greatest pioneers of the anti-intellectual populist tripe that has cursed the United States ever since.
