I suppose that this not only belongs under environment, but pop culture & the media, and several others categories. But because I find it's main purpose in Environment, I put it here. Hummers have extremly bad fuel efficiency, and are terrible for the environment. They get what, 15 miles to the gallon? GROSS!! Imagine what it would be like if evertone drove a car with that mileage? (cough cough) Think of how many greenhouse gases Hummers put in the air? If not everyone can drive these horrible cars, we do those that do think they can? While the Hummer may be safe for the person driving it, it isn't for anyone else on the rode. I find Hummers so large, you could possibally be in one and not see a tiny Smart Car (go Smart Cars!) driving on the rode, and run over them. Of coarse, the person in the Hummer will be fine, because those things are like army tanks! But what about the person in the small car? DEAD OR INJURED!!! When I take over the world, my first act as dictator will be to out law Hummers and other unnessesaryly huge vehicles. FOR SURE!!!

I know kibukun, I probably won't rule the world. I'm just very ambisuos, like one of my friends, and were just having fun making are own governmen. (she is vice-dictator ). But why not shoot for the sky? I'm strong enough. Ever if I don't rule the world, I can atleast change it. And yes, I know, that my opinion does not over rule anybody's. But they are for the most part correct. We own a miny, and yesterday we were stopped next too a Hummer. There is reason any one needs a car that big.

I was going to correct you and say that we have a democratic republic, but the democracy part of our system of government has long since vanished, so I'll let it stand.

when YOU rule the world? try telling that to politicians... if you ruled the world you'd probably be a fascist/communist dictator, which ain't exactly the best kind of government. however, i admire your courage and concern. but we don't need a dictator for a leader, we already have a republic. and a republic is the best form of government ever created. and by the way, your oppinion DOESN'T overrule anybody. your oppinion counts just as much as everyone else's. and noone will ever rule the whole world because it is impossible for a single ruler to rule such a large place.

quote: As for parking it...heh, I have a hard time parking any car, but I've never seen anyone trying to park a Hummer, especially in the city. Most people who live in cities (or very close to them) don't own cars at all since public transportation is much easier within a city
tell that to the many Hummer drivers I see in down town Chicago. Every time I go downtown (which is not very often, cuz I hate the city), I see at least two. quote: However, ArtistGirl, outlawing a car like that would be worse than making it. outlawing a car would be like outlawing a cell phone you don't like. Besides, if it has such bad millage why don't they use a diesel engine? I have several perfectly legitimit reasons for outlawing Hummers. besides, ny oppinion over rules all. Now, and when I rule the world.

clpo is right, most people don't really use them for off-road (for some odd reason) and having them in the big city is waste, because you have this large vehicle in a compact area, it's just too hard to drive in places like that. However, ArtistGirl, outlawing a car like that would be worse than making it. outlawing a car would be like outlawing a cell phone you don't like. Besides, if it has such bad millage why don't they use a diesel engine? Diesel may be more expensive, but is a lot more convenient. that's why semis use diesel, and most liquid pumps and warships (well, most large ships in general) but still, Hummers aren't exactly evil. They're just for the bigger people. (note that I mean people with more money)

Well, it's only the original Hummer (the H1) that's made on the same production line as military HMMWV. Halfway through, it splits off and gets the civilian treatment. Those are the gigantic ones, and they cost a lot of money. Most people who get Hummers drive the H2 or H3, which are smaller and more inexpensive. The H3 is about the size of a regular SUV. As for parking it...heh, I have a hard time parking any car, but I've never seen anyone trying to park a Hummer, especially in the city. Most people who live in cities (or very close to them) don't own cars at all since public transportation is much easier within a city. I think Hummers tend to show up most in the suburbs, where there's more space to drive them around. Of course, that still doesn't make it a good choice. No one really needs a car that big, and most people who drive Hummers don't take them off-road at all. A sedan would serve the same purpose for a lot less money (especially in terms of gasoline).

Yes, that is where the whole pop culture and the media aspect comes in. For some reason, people think that they can drive these over sized vehicles because well, they can. But that doesn't say they should. It's like alot of things. Like, I can do many things and get away with it, but does that mean I should? But diving a military vehicle is kand of like suppoeting war in my view. And does some one living in the city of Chicago need an army truck? Aren't army trucks made for the army? Who needs a gigantic car in the city? How do they even fit in parking spaces?

Actually, 15 MPG isn't that bad, and I think Hummers get less. As to why people drive them, why not? Cars are often seen as status symbols. What better status symbol than a car derived from a military vehicle?

Plus, I think Hummers are ugly. They look like a box on wheels. Really big wheels. And a reallly big box. And a really big everything. They are to big. I know, looks don't make them evil. But it does add to the question "why would any one want such a silly, evil car?" quote: we do those that do think they can? Sorry, type-o. It should be "why do those that do..."
