You're walking down the street, and you see tons of trash on the ground. You just want to pick it all up, but you're with your friends and apparanttly it's "embarassing" and "stupid" .. What do you do? Just walk off and try to get it out of your head? Or do you forget whatever your friends said and drop down and pick it all up...? Sometimes you feel like you're in a crowd of thousands of ppl, yet you're completely alone.

What would you do
?

I forgot about this...lol....such a long time ago. If you want to pick it up good fo you your helping the earth and having a cleaner enviromemt. And if not thats your poragative. (wtf) and eg i was whondering if you say that your a really clean person and clean up and dont litter then why did you say that you would dump more trash on the ground a roll around in it. I mean that defeats the purpose of you saying that you dont litter and your clean. Or is that just one of your sacastic remarks to just get under our skin?

As I said before, the Earth does not need our help. The Earth will last until the sun blows up. If we kill ourselves off with all of our pollution, that is Earth's way of healing itself of a cancer called Homo Sapien. It sucks that we'll all have to die in order for our planet to be healthier, but that is the way of nature. Picking up trash and being vegetarian is not going to stop that process.

Global Warming (if it's true) is an example of this. The Earth will overheat, kill us all, then over time it will cool again, because pollution has gone down to zero, and the Earth will get back to normal.

You two sound almost exactly the same...

Actually I do realize it. And I revel in the destruction I'm causing. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling to know that I'm responsible...for the Earth doing what it's been doing the for the past couple billion years. Yeah, the Earth is a little bit bigger than me. Me ignoring a hypodermic needle in the gutter is not going to cause the Earth to blow up in five years. It will fix itself. Just as it's always done. Just as it will always do.

In the beggining of this discussion I needed people's opinion on what to do in this type of situation. But now I know even more than what I asked for!!

Some people DO care about the Earth A LOT, and they want it to last as long as it can, and if picking up trash on a weekday instead of just watching brain-washing TV will help, so be it.

On the other hand, some people don't really care about the Earth, but they DO care about theselves but don't realize that by being so selfish that THEY are a little peice of the destruction that is going on in this Earth.

Thanks, to all of you, for showing and telling me the answer to my question..=]

Anyway, I'm obessively clean. I actually like to clean. I never litter. But I'm just not going to waste my time picking up garbage around my city, when the sanitation department is going to pick it up anyway and dispose of it properly.

I clean up my messes. I keep things clean where I am. If I see someone throw trash on the ground, I'll probably yell at them. But am I going to clean up their mess? No. It may sound juvenile, but it's their mess; they get to clean it up.

Because this answer seems to not be understood...

Sanitation is key. Walking along the highway back home, I've seen pretty much everything in the ditch, including XXX-rated movies and MRIs. THose are NOT something you want to pick up with your bare hands. You need to worry about yourself first. If you pick something up and get infected with something (I know this is extreme, but it is a slight possibility) you won't be helping much after that. Basically, if you want to pick up trash, join the people who pick up trash on a normal basis who have the correct equipment.

I'm pretty sure that's what others were saying, too.

If this is such a huge issue to you, write letters to your state or city goverments about it. In my hometown of Anchorage, AK, you'll rarely see trash because the city pays people to clean it up every summer.

Anyway, we humans are going to poison and kill ourselves sooner or later. It is inevitable. Even if everyone was vegetarian and picked up trash, the Earth would still deteriorate. That is just nature's way of culling the herd so the Earth can heal itself, regroup and get back to normal. Mother Nature does not in any way need our help.

am I the only one who sees the irony in this statement?

I take care of my crap and leave no trace in the wilds just like the good ole BSA showed me to. But clpo's got a point... we do have sanitation and conservation groups to deal with that

See, that's where you're wrong. It's not your responsibility, no, but you should be mature enough and care about your environment enough and, well, not be so selfish..

Sanitation departments exist for a reason...

Don't get me wrong. I'll clean up my own mess, but it's not really my responsibility to clean up for the rest of the world.
