Did you know that many countries who have claimed land around the poles are arguing over who gets what underwater land after the caps melt? And one of those countries is the United States. What do you say? Would you prefer to expand your country at the expense of the whole world?

No, *you* don't know what you're talking about because you didn't bother to look into the issue past the first post. Again.

im not so sure that you know what your talking about, because here's what i read - the united states and other countries are causing global warming so they can claim useless land thats thousands of feet under the ocean.

that has got to be one of the stupidest things i've heard in a while.

Ooh! I've seen Greenland! We flew over it on our way home from Germany!

Surprisingly enough, this may be true. But it's more about shipping routes than actual land. There's a little article about it in the November 2007 issue of Discover, page 18.

and that land is useful... how? if we want land under water most nations already have plenty of territorial waters to develop and most of the arctic waters are supposedly international waters

however... this makes slightly more sense http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,156722,00.html?ESRC=eb.nl

they're not after land-based resources nor do they want the polar cap to melt away completely. It's all about shipping and strategic capabilities. They don't give a rats ass about the land on the bottom it's the water itself

Antarctica has land beneath the ice, but the Arctic is primarily floating ice anchored by a few islands. Greenland, for instance, has a giant hole in the middle of it. It's not visible because of the permafrost, but if the ice were to melt, Greenland would be more of a giant crescent than a big island.

Anyways, I haven't heard this anywhere, so I'm guessing it's no more than a rumor.

*tosses a flag* bullshit call on the field

1. the arctic cap is primarily ice sooo... what land?
2. Antarctica is already divided up any way
3. at two distinct points in the time frame of recorded human history earth has been distinctly warmer then it is currently. 1100 BC had the planet at something like 64 degrees on average and in 1300 AD the planet was 4 or 5 degrees warmer then present (don't have exact numbers, chart isn't in front of me at present) Source: Climitologist Cliff Harris
4. source it or shove it
