Why does the majority of the population say, "global warming isn't a problem," or they don't care? I understand that most try to cover it up because they're big industrial business tycoons and the don't want to make any less money, but to be so selfish! These people are the equivalent to Lex Luther or something, only act for their benefit. But the world is hurting! And its going to hurt all of us in th long run! In the area i grew up in you automatically don't trust anybody because everybody is lying. But I didn't think it applied to the entire population. Even the U.S. president denies global warming! Global Warming is happening! Its ruining the planet's ecosystems! How can they be so selfish!?!

Pro-business. That's why there were so many objections. Saudi Arabia is one of the leading exporters of oil, which is not something you take out of the ground in an especially environmentally friendly way, and that's not even going into refining it. China has a lot of factories and coal mines, which also are pretty nasty. They scale back on regulations in order to increase production. The United States is much the same way in certain industries. It's generally cheaper to be dirtier, and businesses are generally the stingiest things around.

Thats my back up plan and to honest I don't know if marine biology is exactly what I want to do. Marine life is where my heart is at, I've even posted about marine ecosystems before. I love the land and nature, but I'm a Californian. I love the ocean, and the reefs are really taking the damage of global warming, and the reef is, more or less, the backbone of the coastal sea. Although, there are others ways to get the truth to the public, and I want to keep an open mind.

Why not environmental studies since you seem to have an interest in it?

Well thanks for your replies. I know global warming has always been cycling. But like I said, people are just too selfish to care, it frustrates me. I was only only ranting because I was upset. I've done articles and reports on the environment, I know whats going on. People should at least try. I start college this summer to major in marine biology and minor in journalism, so I can get the information to the masses. Thats the main thing I'm doing, but what about others?

As Shade said, it's going to happen whether we like it or not. The key issue here is how severe it will be. We can affect that...to a point. But no matter how eco-friendly we all become (and even that's asking a bit much for most people), climate change will still happen. I think the main reason people don't "do their parts" is because too much is being asked of them. They went about their daily lives ten or twenty years ago with no problems and now they're being told that 9 out of 10 things they do in a day are harmful to the environment and now they either a) have to give up what they like to do or b) pay twice as much for something in order to be eco-friendly. For example, if I go to the grocery store, I can either get a pound of regular apples for $5 (I don't really know the price of apples, so this is just a random number) or one or two organic apples for $5. Which do you think I'm going to pick? I'd rather pay less for apples, regardless of what kind of pesticides and fertilizers went into them. Heck, I've been eating apples my whole life and I still only have five fingers on each hand... Anyways, even if everyone changed their day-to-day actions, that still wouldn't help enough. Humans are too decentralized, which means more driving in order to get from point A to point B. In order to achieve optimum eco-friendliness, we'd have to go back to a centralized lifestyle, where everyone only lived a couple of blocks from a place where they could do their shopping. But people aren't willing to do that either. It's too much trouble, and not everyone likes living close together like that. Ecologically-speaking, living in a big city (where you're within walking distance from everything) is better than living way out in the country-side (where you have to drive to get anywhere). I'd rather live out in the boonies, but that's just me. I think the biggest issue here is that most people--myself included--simply don't care. Yes, the world is changing. Yes, I can do something about it. But it's going to happen no matter what, so I might as well just do what's easiest and best for me. Besides, it'll save me a lot of money. Is it selfish? Yes. I won't deny that. But for every apathetic guy like me, there are at least two or three who care about the environment. Sure, I could care too, but I just don't want to. I guess that's all it really boils down to.

"Global warming" has happened many times in the Earth's history. Polar switches and ecosystem changes have occurred over and over again. We can't stop it. We might not survive it. So just live.
