Attention NOISEmakers:

Who is your hero?

A National survey conducted by the Barron Prize found that:
  • "Only half of American teens have a hero"
  • "Of those teens who did name a well-known hero, more than half named a movie star, musician, or athlete."
  • "More than twice as many teens cited as their heroes Superman and Spiderman than cited Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, or Martin Luther King, Jr."
  • "Apart from family members, only three women were cited as heroes, despite the fact that half the respondents were female."

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes is seeking nominations for its 2005 awards. The Barron Prize honors young people ages 8 to 18 in the U.S, Canada, and Puerto Rico who have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet. Each year, ten winners each receive $2,000 to support their service work or higher education. Nomination deadline is April 30, 2005.

For more information and to nominate a hero you know, visit www.barronprize.org.

I'll have to say that my hero is God.
My earthly hero is I'll have to say my Dad and Mom.

I don't think I have anyother heroes than that.
I really don't care for movie stars. I think that they are stupid.

One of my modern heroes is Lucille Ball.
(I watched the special on her last night, thus she has become awesome. lol) She has a great view of life that is important for me to look up to b/c I think I'm too passive about many things, and she was so set on achieving her revolutionary goals and totally exceeding expectations. She was the 1st woman to head a studio, and she had lots of other firsts, like she was the first woman to take on a man's role of comic. Previously women played typical movie roles like clever seductress or housewife or fantasy girl, but Lucille decided to be the first woman to look up to Chaplin and other old comic "geniuses" and mimic them in her shows. She was also really involved in her productions and was on top of everything and was amazing at what she did while banashing some limits set on women. Anyway...I agree with Euterpe and I feel we need some mention of figures from the entertainment industry. Razz

I suppose if I have any heros, they'd be Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. for obvious reasons.

Oh, and myself. I'm my own hero.

It's Saturday and I'll do what I want. Also, my coherancy is still secure. So long as I have that I'll continue to post. Seeing as I opine more clearly while intoxicated than many do while sober I think I'll be OK. Hemingway wrote drunk, so did Fitzgerald. I'm not comparing myself to them but feeling a tad alchoholic never prevented anyone from creating great things and ideas.

Since you're so smart, FML. I thought I'd show you how to spell a few words:

Chalenging- challenging
Sypmathy- sympathy
Extrapalated- extrapolated

Have a nice day, FML.

Calm down. I wasn't implying in the slightest that he finds Hitler heroic. I was just chalenging the extrapalated logic of his statement. I even nearly put a line in about that. I was merely stating my distain with the trend of confusing sypmathy with respect. I have sympathy with someone losing their home in a hurricane but I would have respect for how they dealt with it.

Shut up, FML. He wasn't implying that Hitler was heroic. He didn't specify Hitler.

Victims of bullying

Hitler was bullied. Being bullied isn't heroic. Standing up into the bully's, rapist's, etc. memory, holdinng your head up and saying to yourself that you won't let them defeat you. Thats heroic. Going on living your life after it, thats heroic. Some are destroyed. Some are consumed with hatred and anger, those people are not my heroes. Celtic and people like her who are just made stronger and smarter, they are heroic.
