Once again, off the coast of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia, an earthquake has struck leaving hundreds of people killed and about 40% of property damage. Can you imagine the psychological impact that a second earthquake in three months will have on these people and these children? How does it impact you? How do you think it would impact you if you were there? Could you remain positive? Would you give in to complete panic and fear, knowing the ground is never safe beneath you? Do you think you would rise to the occasion and find strength and perseverance or would you need to completely crumble first? What would you want done to help you if you were in this situation and what do you think you can do to help?

but who moves those plates?

All of the Earth's land masses are "floating" on a layer of molten rock. The Earth's core is extremely hot, and the magma closer to the surface is cooler. Cool lava at the surface sinks, while extremely hot lava in the core rises and this process occurs over and over, all day, everyday, creating constant movement, which is what produces the force needed to move the tectonic plates. When the plates collide, an earthquake occurs. Normally, the plates continue to push into each other which creates more earthquakes and mountains. So if Indonesia is surrounded by mountians, volcanoes, or under-water volcanoes, it shouldn't be surprising that they have frequent earthquakes in short periods of time.

If you want to know why the Earth's core is so hot, I could explain that for you as well. Otherwise, I suggest you pay more attention in school.

I don't think I could handle all that grief and fear. I don't think I want to even inagine! I consider myself a pretty emotionally strong person on the whole, but being in those situations would likely be more than I could handle. I'm sending hope and courage to all of the people over there.

There is one thing that happened during the tsunami that is in the Bible, it says somewhere in Revelations that "islands will be moved" and an island was moved by the tsunami.

Actually, it just seems like the tectonic plates in that area are moving, like they should be.

Of course Earthquakes are like that.

But think of, we have 2 earthquakes (one causing a huge tsunami), the Beslan School Siege, Spain's 9/11, and a useless war going on in the last recent years.

I see what you're saying, celtic. I kind of know how they feel, because I live in one of the areas that was hardest hit by Hurricane Ivan, and I saw a lot of destruction. I know it isn't the same as what is going on with the earthquakes, but we've been told that we're going to have hurricane seasons like last year's for many years to come, with 4 to 8 major hurricanes hitting Florida. There is less than 2 months until the next hurricane season, and we haven't finished cleaning up from Ivan. So it kinda seems like our world is tumbling beneath us. I feel really sorry for the people in the areas that were affected by the earthquake, and I hope they find the strength to make it through this.
