From Equality Now:

quote:
A schoolgirl around 12 years old travels on a commuter train. A man who has been following her gropes and sexually molests her. Eventually the train stops and she runs frightened into a public toilet, followed by her assailant who handcuffs and rapes her. The assailant takes her prisoner and repeatedly rapes her in various locations. Her mother and teenaged sister suffer the same fate. This family is targeted for rape as punishment because the older sister had previously reported to the police the attempted sexual assault of another woman by the rapist. This is the storyline of RapeLay, a rape simulator computer game produced by Illusion Software and sold in Japan. Prior to issuing this Action Equality Now brought RapeLay to the attention of Amazon Japan which also sold the game. Since then it has removed the game from sale, however it continues to sell similar titles based on stalking and sexually molesting women and girls.

This is so wrong and disturbing. Take action with Equality Now:

  • Write to Illusion Software to demand it stops making games, including RapeLay, that promote sexual violence against women
  • Write to Amazon Japan to ask it to stop selling similar products
  • Write to Japanese government officials to get them to ban the sale of these games

the child aspect is what bothers me the most.

minors for some odd reason, at least in america, are not considered to have the same basic rights us 18+'s enjoy. soooo i say if you want to make a video about rape don't put kids in it. then again, in japan, they have magazines that portray nude middle schoolers (anime).

i don't think i'd ever buy rapelay... sounds boring.

I would never consider a freedom of speech argument to be a 'light' one.

I never technically said that they should be able to sell those games, I'm not sure how I feel about that. But there is no reason someone cannot create those games. There are simulated rape games all over the internet, and no matter how offensive I find them personally I don't think they can be removed.

I don't know about the research you mentioned, but if you could provide a link or an article I'd gladly check it out.

the thing is, simulating the rape of women is extremely offensive and completely wrong. It should not be marketed. There is direct research showing the increase in violence because of video games simulating it, and the potential is there for this as well. Women are brutally raped every single day- this is something that should not be taken lightly as a 'freedom of speech' argument.

The companies may be legally allowed to create these games in certain countries, but we can certainly exercise our own freedom of speech by fighting back. I have never been a fan of games that realistically glamorize violence, but I think it's pretty sick that they are making games that glorify brutal rape. I'll write my letters in the hope that they'll make a difference.

    Freedom of Speech.
This may not apply to Japan, but as an American I think that video game programmers have the right to make any game. No matter how disgusting, degrading it is.

This is appalling and makes me sick to my stomach. Why is this something that people think is a 'game.'

I will def. write to these people. Hopefully this message will get sent across the internet!
