what standard should be used for the laws of this country? What was used by the founding fathers? Do you think they had something there?

Why not? It's fashionable to say that "there really is no right answer", but what's the rational behind that? Everything is reletive, but based upon some sort of natural code, there MUST be a best answer to some problems. Practically anyway. If your talking in completely vauge terms, then no, there is not "right answer". However, realistically there most certainly are MANY right answers.

I think that the best we can come to some sort of "absolute morality" is a code based on natural law, reason, and wieghted towards individual freedom. A benevelent hobbesian sort of deal I guess. Other than that though there's really no true universal code. That said, if we have a moral code for our society, we must defend it because it's one of the defining characteristics of our culture. Statements like "People just need to be tolerant of other peoples decisions." are flawed, because where do you fit in Hitler, or Mao, or or Dahlmer, Bundy, and McVeigh? If there is no moral standard that you are willing to defend, then your culture is going to fall apart.

Green has got something there... but I actually think to avoid this whole debate, the founding fathers made the country religiously free, so that we wouldn't have a "moral standard" because morality is an opinion and opinion is religion...

I totally agree with Greenleaf's comment.
1-We are all born originals - why is it so many of us die copies? 2- Life is tough... it's tougher if you're stupid.

Obviously their "moral values" were different from what our's are today. Even today no one can seem to decide what the "moral standard" should be. A moral is something you as a person set, therefore everyone's are different. My opinion about "moral" issues such as abortion, homosexuality, etc. are most certainly different from at least one other person who will click on this thread. So in short, there never were moral standards and probably never will be. People just need to be tolerant of other peoples decisions.
