You're just mad because Pullman disses something you identify with. If the books had involved islam instead you wouldn't have a problem. I don't even want to imagine how much they've had to trash the original story line to make it a kiddie movie. The third book has tons of sexual content, I wonder how they'll adapt the climax scene to make it look less like a couple of 13 year olds having an orgasm. quote: When the kids read the book they see what actually happens in the end, and somehow makes kids believe that there is no god and ultimately results in turning them into atheists.
I don't see the problem.

I bought the trilogy this morning so I can see what everyone's pissed off about. I still don't see an interview by the author, though, supporting the theory.

Aha. Then I'd say that parents that shield their children from everything that doesn't conform to their beliefs probably don't buy their kids a lot of fantasy books anyway.

I said it was a rumor, yes, but who said I believed it? And to Sphinx, that's where the rumor comes in. The big religious groups believe that the reason why they watered the movie down so it would seem as if it was based on a little kids book. Thus fooling parents and having them buy this book for their child. Then the kids truely find out what the book was originally about. Then magically turning them into atheist. And thats what their all complaining about.

Nothing on the website is outlandish or crazy. I think I missed the point... I really think that it's idiotic to make The Dark Materials series into children's movies. The story is way too complex and symbolic for it to make any sense whatsoever in a sweet children's movie. I mean I thought the daemons were just brilliant, so what? Now we get a Nicole Kidman movie with a talking cat? Can't anything just be a fucking book anymore? quote: The Dark Devices Triology was essentially a rant against christianity with a cool plot around it. The ranting killed the plot
I thought it was more a rant against the church or the institution of religion than against Christianity itself, but it's been a while since I read the books. I do agree that the story itself had the potential to be brilliant but it was just a bit too hostile, too demonising in the end for me to enjoy it. I'm a bit vague on the details but SPOILER: don't they somehow defeat the Authority by having sex in the end? Or was the sex just implied? Either way, I thought it was a just a tad too anti-religion. The movie, however, will probably have nothing to do with religion and be about a mean stepmother. And the sequel will be about talking bears. Yay. None of the kids who see this are going to leave the cinema denying God, I don't see what people have to complain about.

*sigh* I'll say this to you Amp, and to everyone. As an author, I demand this. Give me an interview with the writer affirming this claim. Until then, give him the benefit of the doubt. Good. God.
