I don't see why not, hell in the UK people have declared their religion to be "Jedi" and they get days I like George Luca's birthday off, and a "holy week" in may at some point and so forth

There is a slight but important difference between a religion and something you came up with one day when you were bored. I don't mean to knock Poco Ennuism, but if you're the only one who practices it, I doubt you're going to get anyone to recognize it as official. Heck, it took people long enough to accept Wicca as a religion and that has many thousands of adherents.

If it is something you feel that strongly about, I think what you would have to do is be able to clearly explain your religion and how these certain actions you want to take help to fulfill the requirements and objectives of your religion.

For example, you say you get Friday the 13th off...why? With Catholics, we get Good Friday off because for our faith, it was the date that Christ was dying on the cross. We get Christmas off in observance of Christ's birth. We have been able to make that connection.

What objective of your religion does dressing like a pirate fulfill?

Making a mockery of organized religion does not quite fall into the same category as protected religious freedoms.

ehh my parents are athiests, but support my religion. They'll let me stay home, but my teacher gets mad.

Then have them talk to your teacher. Or call you in sick.

But I'm not allowed to stay home then.

Because of your parents? Usually, unless your consistently truant, no one but your parents/relatives can make you go to school. Besides, you can always skip.

quote:
Everyone who wants to gets to go to school wearing crosses. I should be allowed to wear pirate clothes to school on Talk like a Pirate Day, as it is part of my religion, but I'm not.

See, the difference between those is that usually crosses are small and don't draw attention, whereas it would draw attention to someone walking around as a Pirate and subsequently deemed a distraction. However, it is quite possible that you could wear pirate clothes that are regular clothes as well and get away with it.

Whast do you think?

I don't like religion and politics and school mixing, but in my experiences throughout school, teachers/administrators were pretty good about treating everyone religious wise equally. They didn't complain if people missed for Yom Kippur, nor Rosh Hashanah, nor Ash Wednesday, nor Holy Week. It was just expected that the families-- which play a big role in whether or not a person can miss school do to religion-- wanted their children home/in services to observe the holiday.

You can miss classes, though, if your parents see your religion is serious and excuse you. It really does come back to the parents.

Oh, also, in France, there are NO religious symbolism allowed in public places-- no crosses, no head scarves, nothing. I don't know if that is a better policy or not, but if you feel like you should be allowed to do something and can't, then talk to your parents and your teachers and try to reach and understanding.
