I just feel like people are basing who they are as a person on their faith. How are we ever going to get rid of racism etc. if everybody is like this. It's kind of ridiculous...

I guess I don't really get what you are saying. For instance my faith, Christianity, makes up who I am, and as a follower of Christ I must love my neighbor as myself regardless of race. If I do not love my neighbor, then I am not a follower of Christ, and my faith is void.

Values are central to who we are as a person. In most societies, families and of course the individual faith provides most of if not all of that set of values. Racism/Sexism/etc have some grounding in faiths but the majority of world religions preach general tolerance and acceptance. Further of the faiths that are intolerant, that intolerance is not inherent to that religious system. For example sects of Christianity in the American south are historically tied to racism and racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan however Christianity itself is accepting of all races.
