that makes sense since religion's goal was to keep people as drudges by promising a better afterlife if you suffer and don't kill yourself. We atheist have no such delusions.

Why do people tend to think that all those who have a religion and believe in a higher power are therefore ignorant to the outside world and have never suffered any kind of tragedy?

On the contrary, the latter is why many people decide to become religious.

I was an atheist till I realised I was GOD . Its written on my fav T-shirt .
I am an atheist and proud to be one . But its not that I vehmenently refuse that GOD does not exist . Lets just say I dont believe in HIM - yet .
Its not that I dont beleive in GOD because I havent seen him . Hey i can believe in asteral projection and ghosts and ghouls and closet monsters and any other paranormal deal you can come up with .
Why dont I believe in God ? Is it because everybody else believes in him . yes thats the reason for my doing or not doing most of the things . Or maybe its because Im too bullheaded to realize that I am answerable to someone all the time
GOD is not my conscience , HE is not my life jacket and he is most definitely not my oxygen .
Its people who exist that drive you to suicide . Not people who dont even exist .

Although i doubt there is any actual link, the way I would explain such a thing is that Atheists do not live in the blissfull ignorance that those in religion do.
Therefore when tragedy does strike, to the extent that suicide is a possibility, they have no god to seek comfort with, or to make them sustain life because they must serve some higher purpouse, and therefore take thier life...
I'm proud to be Atheist, and i've accepted the brutal truths' of existence.

The only correlation between Atheism and Sanity i see, is a strong one (or very close to +1 on a PMCC for all you Mathematicians out there)

As i've said, i am sceptical to any "link", but these are my thoughts.

Maybe being Christian is linked to mental instability. Even without certain proof of God ("I have faith!" is not proof) Christians clutch onto God.

I'm not saying that is right or wrong. Humans have a need to believe in something bigger and "better" than them. What better thing to believe in that an all powerful being, true or not?

Ack, evidently I shouldn't have said that...I'm not trying to ***** or anything, I was attempting to make a point. And I don't give a damn, I just get annoyed when Christians (not a generalization, I just mean some) act like they're the victims when Christiananity is the most accepted religion in this country.

Okay, I'm not wrong either because I have had my fair share of being bashed because of my Christians beliefs, and I deal with it frequently.

Everyone gets bashed at least once for something or another. Religion is a feature you may get bashed for more often. You know what? Cry me a river...I've gotten bashed for being a Christian before and, while I try to defend myself and my religion, I don't really care. They can bash me all they want. They're not going to change my mind and I'm probably not going to change they're mind.

Why does it matter which one of you gets bashed more frequently for being an atheist or Christian?

Quote- Okay first off, I am so sorry you feel that life is worthless. However, you are totally wrong about Christians bashing atheists. If you havent read a lot of the other posts on here, Christians are constantly told that the Bible is a fantasy book, God doesnt exist, and we are gulible for thinking such things. So actually, we are being bashed for actually believing, not the other way around. Most Christians wont tell you you are going to hell (even though you are) but we try to save those who dont believe.

By the way, as religion tends to develop as a way for humans to comfort themselves so they don't have to think about life, your data (if real) would indicate that religious people are mentally unstable and require their belief systems for consolation.

Kind of like TV. When humans have had a hard day at work they are stressed, they get home and turn on the tv to relax. Before TV they would go to church and pray.
