I found this quiz in an article in an old Time Magazine of one of my teachers'. I cleaned my room tonight and found it. It's not just about Christianity either; obviously you can be spiritually aware without being Christian. Very interesting and it makes you think about yourself a lot.

True/False:

1. I often feel so connected to the people around me that it is like there is no separation between us.
2. I often do things to help protect animals and plants from extinction.
3. I am fascinated by the many things in life that cannot be scientifically explained.
4. Often I have unexpected flashes of insight or understanding while relaxing.
5. I sometimes feel so connected to nature that everything seems to be part of one living organism.
6. I seem to have a "sixth sense" that sometimes allows me to know what is going to happen.
7. Sometimes I have felt like I was part of something with no limits or boundaries in time and space.
8. I am often called "absent-minded" because I get so wrapped up in what I am doing that I lose track of everything else.
9. I often feel a strong sense of unity with all things around me.
10. Even after thinking about something a long time, I have learned to trust my feelings more than my logical reasons.
11. I often feel a strong spiritual or emotional connection with all the people around me.
12. Often when I am concentrating on something, I lose awareness of the passage of time.
13. I have made real person sacrifices in order to make the world a better place, like trying to prevent war, poverty and injustice.
14. I have had experiences that made my role in life so clear to me that I felt very happy and excited.
15. I believe that I have experienced extrasensory perception.
16. I have had moments of great joy in which I suddenly had a clear, deep feeling of oneness with all that exists.
17. Often when I look at an ordinary thing, something wonderful happens. I get the feeling that I am seeing it fresh for the first time.
18. I love the blooming of flowers in the spring as much as seeing an old friend again.
19. It often seems to other people like I am in another world because I am so completely unaware of things going on around me.
20. I believe that miracles happen.

Scoring Give yourself a point for each true answer and 0 points for each false answer.

14 and above = highly spiritual, a real mystic
12-13 = spiritually aware, easily lost in the moment
8-11 = spiritually average; could develop more spiritual life if desired
6-7 = a practical empiricist lacking self-transcendence
1-5 = highly skeptical, resistant to developing spiritual awareness

I'm going to be positive (or at least as positive as I am capable of being) and try again...

I got a 5. Whooo!

Yeah, I remember this quiz... I took it again. I got a 10.
I'll probably get higher when I get older because I'll be a writer. For me, writing is a very spiritual practice. Right now, I have to do school and crap, so I can't write all day long. When I do have the means to write all day long, it'll be different. Still, I am often in my own world, thinking about "big" things like God or history or literature...
Can't think of anything to add to the list.

It's obvious that some of the people that you would expect to get a lower score than others, actually get a higher score.

The first time I took it, a friend of mine took it right after me. I thought he would get a lower score and he actually got much higher.

See, it's not about how religious you are. A lot of people, when seeing this, will equate the word "spiritual" in the title with the word "religious" but it's not like that at all. Some of you may say that I'm very religious but when looking at my score, I'm less spiritual than some of you.

And like liberalhugger said, would anyone else add anything to the list? I think that would be a good exercise for this thread.

Practical Empiricist. Huh. I kinda like the sound of that. I find the questions selected to determine spirituality intriuging (wow, I think I bothched the sp of that one). It mentions nothing about following any religios dogma, which is so wrapped up with most people's concept of spirituality. Would anyone add anything else to the list?

3. When I took this quiz in TIME I got a 2. I guess I'm more spiritual.

I bet if I did this in an optimistic mood I'd get a higher score.

I think they are referring to "spacing out" as you're thinking about something that isn't going on around you. Therefore, you are thinking on a higher plane. Therefore, it makes you more spiritual.

However, when I space out, I don't think about much of anything...

8.
I agree that spacing out doesn't seem very spiritual...but I don't know Smile

clpo, I'm not surprised at all. Smile

And, Nick, you're right about some of the questions. It can be a bit tricky to examine yourself so thoroughly.

I got a nine, but I think I probably more fit into the highly skeptical, or at least a practical empiricist... Some of the questions threw me though, so I could've just not understood what they meant and answered wrong, but hey, it's only a 20 question quiz right? Smile

By the way, I ended up being in the 8-11 range but I don't know what would happen if I took it again.

Some of the questions are kinda hard for me. For example: 14. I have had experiences that made my role in life so clear to me that I felt very happy and excited.

If "happy" and "excited" were exchanged with "sad" and "depressed" then I could've answered true...
