I have a question when does a cult become a religon? does it have something to do with congregation size or the number of people who accept it as something not to hide their children from.

That's why I say, religions are just big cults.

Just like the Catholic Church.

quote: with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
Usually the charismatic psychopath, ironically. Cults usually tend to have an extreme control over their followers, basically. Paranoid, secretative, etc.

dictionary.com defines cult as: A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

Crap, worshipping pineapples means it's a cult? ::Hides all her fruit.:: Freakin' Patriot Act.

In the united states christianity is a religion. this is b/c it is the religion that most ppl practice here in america. in places where christianity is the minority is is considered a cult. so basically if in a place a certain practice is a minority then it is a cult....but if it is a majority then it is a religion.

Religions are just big cults. Both control your life, both drain your brain.

Well, if you ask me, I think either could come first. The name is really just a label. Cult = bad and religion = good, for most people.

I found this on a term paper regarding the subject. quote: In order for a religion to become a cult, it needs to develop into a negative form of expression. Cults are often damaging to a person and any people that are close to them. In order for a cult to become a religion, it needs to develop into a positive form of expression. This cult to religion change is dependent on the amount of people that follow it, the respect that it gets from others, and the results of following it.

I don't know. Probably.

In the US there has to be six official members (they used to have to be white males, but I don't think that's applicable anymore). Then, if they so choose, it's a religion.
