I've put this in Spirituality because it's mentioned in the bible and so I thought it was more religious than philisophical.

So, 666, the mark of the beast. What do you think? Do you have any ideas about who it might be or do you or a friend have a few 666's in your life?

I don't actually know very much about the number 666, considering how many sites I've looked at. I have a very curious nature and at the moment, I'm curious about 666.

Well, I'm glad to see a Christian finally admit that humans don't have any special contacts with God. So, all those morons on TV who claim God speaks to them (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell) are indeed liars. Smile

I wouldn't believe the pope was a vessel of God even if he flew to Alaska and looked me square in the eye and told me. But that's no reason to diss him. He hasn't hurt anyone. He gives people hope. He helps people strengthen their belief in God and Jesus Christ. Nothing wrong with that. He just sits in his chair and blesses stuff.

I'm sorry if I think you're slightly off your rocker, but it's the truth.

Seriously, you're looking too much into a simple number. Sure, the Bible says something to the effect that six-hundred and sixty-six is a bad number, but it doesn't say anything about the pope. Have you been reading those stupid Chick tracts? Need I remind you that Catholicism is the original Christianity?

6 is the number of man, he was created on the sixth day. Three sixes because satan mocks the Holy Trinity(Father, Son, Holy Spirit) with his own trinity(The Dragon(satan)the Beast(the anti-Christ)and the false prophet)

Dude, if you're talking about Roman Numerals, you are waaaay off. For the whole thing, written out and added correctly, is 353. Even if you switched the numbers around from most to least and added them, you only get 661.

Don't be dissing the pope.

The number 666 is the Mark of the Beast and the number of man. Watch, it's the number of a man. And up over the pope of Rome, it's wrote, "VICARIUS FILII DEI." It's wrote in Roman letters. Just write it out yourself tomorrow. V-I-C-I-R... oh, just keep it out in Roman letters, and draw your line and add it up, and see what you got: 666. Where's he setting?

The Mark of the Beast is where christian will no long be able to buy or sell anything unless they have the Mark on their foreheads or hands.

And anyways recently they deciphered some really old version of Revelations that was previously unreadable and it said 616, not 666.

666 is a three-digit value one greater than 665 and one less than 667. It is also the square root of 443556.

In other words, it's merely a number. Whether or not it stands for anything is up to you.

666 is mentioned in Revelations. The "Devil" and his worshippers are supposed to bear "the mark of the devil" -- 666 -- but it's completely plausible that isn't even a superficial mark.

Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number
of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six.
- Revelations 13:18.

But, the real question lies in whether or not 666 predates the Bible. The popular theory is that it's supposed to stand for the Roman Emperor Nero, whose named supposedly read '666' in Aramaic, the original language of the Bible.

But after several centuries of translation of the Bible, the origin of 666 has become kinda convoluted, and really flimsy.

Some people even think that people whose names are six letters each bear "the mark of the devil." (i.e. Ronald Wilson Reagan. Wink )

Whether that's true or not, I dunno. But 666 has gotten the same bad rap as the number 13.

Number of the Beast - Wikipedia
quote:
In May 2005 it was reported that scholars at Oxford University using advanced imaging techniques had been able to read previously illegible portions of an early (third century) version of the Book of Revelation, part of its Oxyrhynchus collection of papyri. The fragment gives the Number of the Beast as 616. Scholars now believe the number in question has very little to do with the devil. It was actually a complicated numerical riddle in Greek, meant to represent someone's name. "It's a number puzzle -- the majority opinion seems to be that it refers to the Roman emperor Nero."
