I am a white student and I am searching for scholarships. Well I stumbled upon the American Negro College fund and I was curious. I have many black friends, but whites deserve the same treatment.

Question:
Why do African Americans have their own scholarships?

Choices:
Don't whites deserve their own scholarships if they work hard for it?
Why can't whites have a scholarship just becasue they are white?
Why can't African Americans earn their scholarships like everyone else?

i, being a white American, don't think it's fair to give someone a scholarship just because of the color of their skin. If white americans asked for special treatment, we'd be seen as racist. African Americans sepnt such a long time trying to make the color of their skin unnoticiable, so why now do they think they deserve special treatment?

150 years since the end of slavery seems like a long time, but it is not. Can you imagine what it must have been like to be killed just for being able to read? Or what it must be like to have families separated when sibling or parents were sold down river? Not only that, but after slavery for decades African Americans were denied equal protection under the law, were forced to go to inferior schools, and their advancement was at the discretion of people who saw them as inferior. I understand and know that many African American's have overcome odds and now are living the American Dream, but the majority in the inner city are not....and it is not all their faults. They have the worse schools, most dangerous neighborhoods, worst infrastructure, and little opportunity. Sometimes failure can be attributed to laziness, but there are too many cases of people working extremely hard and having no opportunity. I have been there and I know. I believe that African Americans, because of these circumstances need to come together to help each other; they have recognized a need to invest in their community to bring the same kind of hope and opportunity to African Americans that exist for other Americans. Are there poor deserving white people too, who deserve scholarships and have difficult circumstances? Of course. They should and do have plenty of scholarships for those circumstances. It is just flatly wrong to think, with all of the history and the current circumstances, that their is not a special need in this community.

I'm not racist, but I also think African Americans don't deserve more/better scholarships just because the color of their skin. Ironically, it's just racist and doesn't make much sense to me.

Most of the black families I know make more than my family.

Ideally, scholarships should be based solely on academic merit. Maybe a little bit for low income students, but mostly for merit.

Why do you care like stuff like dat is for blacks that have low income problaly...its known for whites to have more upperhands than us right now in the present..so i dont see it as a big deal for african americans to have certain scholarships for certain people -_-

Then it should be a scholarship for students in a low income, lower privileged situation...not for students with a darker color of skin.

I know black students who went to very good high schools, just as I know white students who went to poor inner-city schools.

i would just like to point out that there are scholarships open to only polish people, left handed people, etc. I think there isn't just a surplus of african american scholarships but a surplus of random scholarships. Plus, ALL the scholarships that are open to everyone. I think you need to look harder...there are thousands and thousands of scholarships!

it may seem unfair but it was unfair the way we were treated befor we overcame slavery.

That was then. This is now. Nobody alive has owned slaves. Why, then, should they be the ones paying for it?

i am african american and i feel as thouqh what does it matter that we have a scholarship dedicated to us ? when it comes down to it the white man has the upper hand in basically EVER situation. but before you qo and speculate, the American Negro College fund is given to african americans who are most likely lower class it is used to help kids who dont have the money to be sent to colleqe. it may seem unfair but it was unfair the way we were treated befor we overcame slavery.

But is not right to give one race a scholsrship because they are of that ethincy. If you can give one to those who are black, hispanic, illegal immigrants, native american, etc, this list will go on and on. But not oncewill you see just caucasian. It baffles me that the world can isloate this certain race. The scholarship given to certain races should be extended to all races.

Let's just eliminate any scholarships based on race entirely. Then we won't have to worry about the issue at all.

Seriously, scholarships should be based on academic merit. Not sports achievements, not race, not gender. Academic achievement only.

hehehe this made me think about a story a friend of mine told me. This white guy was born and raised in south africa before immigrating state side. He applied for an african-american music scholarship. They laughed him out of the office until he came back with a lawyer and evidence that he was more of an african-american then any one in that office. He got the scholarship.

Responding to the actual thread, there's special scholarships for every unique thing under the sun including height, weight and wether or not you have freckles. Just find ones that apply to you and deal with it.
