WV is a state known for negative streotypes, including uneducated, inbred, and low-incomed people. I moved here from Lancaster which is pretty much suburbia (the Amish barely exist so don't go there) and I see so many things wrong in my new state. I want to make it better but I don't know how. I'd like to start with the school system and work my way up from there. But how should I do it and where do I start?

Most of the hicks you dont see in the north or central its mainly in two counties around here.

At any rate, it's impossible to change stereotypes quickly (heck, negative stereotypes regarding blacks have been around since the times of slavery), but the best thing you can do to help change your state's image is to help out in the community. Volunteer at schools and libraries, organize park clean up crews, etc. If you're really ambitious, you could go into student government or campaign for politicians who you think would help the state out and lobby for legislation to improve education and such.

You've always got to start out small, but if everyone chips in, a lot can get done.

Ok...I understand that it's easy to judge other states. Try not to since they probably don't like it just as much as you do. And by the way...It's not really fair to judge an entire state because of what you see on tv or on a Ms. America pagent. I uderstand where you're coming from though. Everybody does that. It's only human.

I live about 10 min from WV border and you are getting involved in a huge undertaking.

Become a teacher,
donate your time to local schools,
start a group for mentoring children.
be a good example.
hold food drives in your area
clothing drives
call job and family services for ideas.
boycott mountain dew....if you dont understand this you soon will, when everyone smiles with no teeth.
drugs are becoming major problems in rural areas, call a local hospital and see if someone would be willing to give a free seminar on what priscription PK can do and to draw people in offer a free lunch, ask places to donate the grub.
