Does anyone else think that athletes have too much leway? I do and I am an athlete. I am a soccer player and at my school it seems like athletes are invincible. Today I just turned down a spot on the varsity team because I don't agree with our policies regarding parties and drugs. In fact today half of the team got caught smoking weed and all they got was a four game suspension. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying partying is bad but these days parties are out of control. They say in public schools people go to parties to get caught. In private schools people go to parties to get high. If it were anybody else (a non-athlete) it would go straight to our schools dicipline board. Lets review four games for smoking weed and no arrest. At a local school with I will name because they should be commended on their actions (Thomas Jefferson high school) their basketball team got caught at a party (not necessarily drink but at a party with alcohol) and they got a 60 day suspension and scholarships got revoked. At my school...4 games not 5 not half of the year not the season...not even a suspension away from school. They smoked weed on SCHOOL GROUNDS during the SCHOOL DAY and only four games? The kids can still attend classes. A few universities recruit kids by throwing huge parties with lots of alcohol and loose women knowing these kids are underage and some can barely spell their names. I don't like feeling that some idiot who has a 2.0 gets into a school like Notre Dame or a comprable football school and a 3.5 kid gets rejected. Does anybody have any input or similar stories?

quote: i think athletes should be suspended for most of the season if they get caught. and i think kids who dont do sports should get suspended or expelled from school
Why are the punishments different? Sports are just like any other activity, like band, art or creative writing. Suspension from school for all of them would be the best equal treatment, out of what you are proposing. But they shouldn't be so different. People who play sports should not get better treatment. This is not a caste we're running here: it's school.

well this is a subject that needs to be talked about to the world. alot of schools dont really give kids the consequences they deserve for their actions. my school is sorta in the middle, it really depends on who you are, to what kinda action is taken. some kids get away with it, while others get suspended, expelled, or sent to alternative school. i think its wrong to only make certain kids pay for their actions but thats how it is today. i think athletes should be suspended for most of the season if they get caught. and i think kids who dont do sports should get suspended or expelled from school or even sent to alternative no matter who you are and what status you have at your school. i think alot of kids get off easy and they shouldnt. im an athlete myself but i feel like if i got caught i should have to pay the most time that is right for the action i did.

It’s my opinion that the whole education system of America is outdated and obsolete; especially policy on drugs & alcohol. Last year a couple of football players posted picture of them drinking alcohol on MySpace, they were caught and suspended for like 40% of their season, but they still go out and party. Schools need to teach kids, and obviously they failed in this case. There’s a man named John C. Underwood who’s touring the country and talking about how the state of New York is cracking down on underage drinking. His non-profit organization American Athletic Instituteis pressing other states to adopt the program of harsh punishment and reform that New York has developed. I think that it’s only a matter of time before this becomes a national thing. It’s really intense and opens your eyes, even to those in High School. His slide show made Al Gore’s look like Uncle Bob’s California vacation footage.

Well, my school, kids smoked pot and even dranks alcohol at school all the time. If they got caught, there was a short meeting with the principle, and tops you got suspended for a day. My school was really lax.

Wow, that is unbelievable. We had one girl who was caught in possesion of drugs on school grounds and within the next five minutes, she was expelled. I can't believe they are going to get away with it. Good for you, dude. Sorry your school sucks, but so does everyone else's so at least you're not alone.
