I think that we have a different definition of unappropriate...and that's cool. We all learn the same thing differently. Now the thing with teachers in school, is that they have to follow a contract and a part of that is that it has to be a safe environment, where there is no foul language and no bad signs or words around. I do think that in some places, our freedom of speech isn't accepted, but in most cases it depends what you say or wear.

In my opinion free speach should be the ability/right to say or wear what you want. I do not believe that anyone has the right to tell you cannot say what you wish, or wear what you wish. Who's right is it to deam what is appropriate? I do not think that anyone has that right.
I am very against the war, and im against Bush. I believe that the people that buy into the "Operation Iraqi Freedom" slogan are so blinded by Bush's good-guy image. I also think that I have the right to say what i just said anywhere on the face of the earth. I think that if I wanted to have a t-shirt saying that, and I wanted to wear it to school, i should be able to do so. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect democracy, and we are not completely free. Even though the 1st Ammendment states that we are free to say what we choose, school, and other institutions have found ways to limit our level of free speach. At my school we can supposably say what we want, but when I wore a shirt that said " NO BLOOD FOR OIL" i was sent to the priciplal's office, and then forced to change my shirt. This is the facist crap people all over the country have to deal with every day. Truely, from what I have seen in the past year, I would rather move zu Deutchland oder France. I dont want to live in a place where I am not allowed to speak my mind, but as long as im here i would like to make a difference. I hope that everyone else can take a stand in their schools, and at home. I hope that everyone will step up, and freely speak their minds. But watch out, this is not a perfect democracy, there could be consiquences!

Who's really to say what is innapropriate?
If kids at my school can run around yelling about gay people going to hell, and teachers can preach to children, even though the law states they cannot, then who really can say that she was innaprpriate?!
MY school does infringe on my religious boundaries w/it's omnipresent pushing of religion. We have a teacher who was refused a renewal of her contract cause she peirced her toungue.Back in middle school no one could wear black more then one day in a row because it was seen as innaprpriate, what if you were of a religion in wich that was an appropriate form of mourning?
It seems only those who are conformed beleive that schools do not infringe.I could be wrong, but that is my experiance.

First things first, Katie does not live in Virginia. She lives in West Virginia, yes it is a state of its own! I think that censorship is big in schools and everywhere else for that matter and I hate it. Censorship only hurts and never helps. If you don't want to see or listen to something, you don't have to, but you have no right to take it away from others.

Many people, like parents, teachers, administrations, teachers, and judges will listen to you, but you have to prove to them that you are serious with something that is a "TRUE" problem, and not just complaining about something soo little in the society. They will listen to what we have to say, but will probably not agree on alot of things that we have to say...Our society works differently the way that we Teenagers thinks, and for a lot of us, we have to grow up and be mature.

As far as our Freedom of Speech, we DO have the right to say whatever we want to say...as long as it is appropriate, and may influence the society then talk...if you are someone that knows it is not appropriate, then I'd step down and figure the problem alone.

Just saying that there are adults that will listen, you just have to prove to them that whatever you are trying to say across to them is appropriate and that will influence everyone in the society.

When the Iraq "war" (read: Rape) started, I put up posters of George W Bush with the label "International Terrorist." Local PE teacher told me to take it down not because it was "disruptive" (a really, really tacky agument if he had used it) but because we shouldn't speak badly against the President at a time like this. Yeah, this teacher was using his job to force political views on me.

I guess my real point is that PE teachers suck. Unless they like Spike Lee and own a pair of Shawn Kemp Kamikazees.

If i had said the same thing that the dixe Chicks did then nothing would happen to me.Yea poeple would have look down at me but My life would not suffer for my opinion.SO then why do stars suffer more then we do aren't they just like us.But when a littel opinion is said about someone else who has higher power then we do then there life is effected greatly. But I do think our freedom of speech is being taken away from us and we just don't know it.We should be able to voice our opinion freely and not have to worry about someone messing up our life,or hurting us because of it. Confused

actually, as a correction confusedone...

You technically are part of nation, no matter what. You will always have some ethnic or social orientation that defines who you are. A nation is separate from a state...

You will always be Scottish, Indian, Spanish, whatever heritage you are or social group you are associated with... you can't change that.

Oh well, sorry to be picky. You already know my views on this topic (if you read all the replies) so I won't post anything futher

I live in the area where she went to school. She moved after her case was settled but, she actually went to school in West Virginia. If you didn't know its a state I really can't blame ya we are pretty small but, we're pleasant people except for the stupid anarchist guy that sued his school and made them ban prayer from their high school graduation. The way I see it is that is also taking away freedom of speech and considering he was the only person in his huge graduating class of over 2,000 people that didn't like prayer at graduation I don't think they should have to stop. I mean I see it as if he didn't like it he doesn't have to pray with them nobody forced him to take part in it. He could do like a girl in my class in 7th grade did since its against her religion to do the pledge of allegiance she politely stood while we were saying the pledge.

The judge in Virgina said that its a disruption and then she was suspended from school, now isnt that hypocritical

Ok I am not a fan of school lately, there is more censorship going on and it makes me sick. They remove books from the library, they are omitting stuff about slavery and human rights from the text books, these things are history and they need to be taught so we don't make the same mistakes....however....

As much as I am against dress codes in school, I agree with the judge but not the punishment. If she is allowed to state her own political views in school, then anyone is right?? So maybe a racist kid will come in the next day with a KKK shirt on, next day a muslim kid comes in with a shirt that says you are all infedels and shall burn, next day a black kid comes in with a shirt that says kill whitey, next day I come in with a shirt the says F*** ALL OF YOU....and so on....despite what everyone would like to think, not everyone shares your views. I have been involved in and seen fights over these same things. I agree with not wearing your politics on your chest as much as not wearing your gang colors to school. You are there to learn, not try and teach other people what is right and wrong...

HOW CAN SPEECH BE FREE IF THEY WON'T LET IT?! It's time to face the facts: If we talked the same way we did with our friends as we did with our parents/teachers, we'd be punished/suspended. We're being prejudiced against saying things they say constantly!! TONS OF STUDENTS PROBABLY AGREED WITH HER, AND T-SHIRTS WON'T DISTRACT PEOPLE UNLESS SHE STARTS HANDING THEM OUT!!! I don't side with that judge, she SHOULD be able to wear what ever t-shirts she wants! If people are allowed to insult people with shirts in school (which they do), why shouldn't some1 voice a non-insulting t-shirt?!! She should be able to!!

People talk of the US being so free, so great. Those same people say you cant disagree. Hypocrites. Those that fought for our freedom of speech fought for the majority's and minority's opinion's.Its not freedom of speech if only the majority is allowed to express itself.

You say Anti-War is disruptive, only because the "Pro-Americans" and "Pro-War" people make it so. The people wearing the shirts are fine, they arent starting fights, the "Pro-Americans" and "Pro-War" people are. Would their shirts have to be turned inside out if us anti-war people started messing with them and starting crap? No, we would be punished severely, does the same go for them? No.

We are not countries. We are not nations. We are not
religions.
We are not gods. We are not weapons. We are not ammunition. We are not
killers.
We will NOT be tools.
I'm not a ****er
I will not die
I will not kill
I will not be your slave
I will not fight your battle
I will not die on your battlefield
I will not fight for your world
I am not a fighter
I am a human being!
