Hi. I'm in a youth group in my community and we were thinking about how we could make graffiti less of a problem in our community. We were thinking about haveing certain walls and statues around our city for anyone to write on. We were also going to start it off with a contest and everyone would get a big piece of wood and the best one would be on display at our city hall.
Do you think this is a good idea? Do you think it will work at all? Any suggestions would be great.
i think its a great idea that you are wanting to make graffiti less of a problem. In our area we did a project to show that graffiti can be a form of art to be appreciate it and found that often it is not appreciated coz of where it is. Also other effects of doin this will be that some of the barriers will be broken down between young people and the rest of society which is great because too often young people are being labelled as thugs and trouble makers when we know that this is only a small minority that are like that. The contest sounds really good because it will bring the community together and may even get the 'trouble makers' in off the streets and give people something to aspire to. The end product should reflect all the things i have mentioned above and so best of luck with it coz its a really good idea
Why not revive old threads? These boards become like junk files without universal opinion. Someone said I like reviving zombie threads. So?
Anyway, a writer will not just tag in one spot because the city allows it. They paint for the thrill of putting their tags up in dangerous spots and not getting caught. I bet in your city, there's a branch of the police called "Vandal Squad" who hunt down writers.
By the way, yes, I have played "Getting Up."
A lot of people regard graffiti as vandalism and oftentimes, it is. Sorry, but I doubt anyone will get that rule of law overturned.
I think it's a start to a good idea. Maybe not statues, but perhaps dedicate a wall to graffiti. Graffiti is a form of art, but it's over-looked and looked at negatively.
I have a great idea. Take a sheet of construction paper. Do your thing, Make it wholesome so the grumps will want to read it. Frame it, call it art and put it on a wall at an art gallery.
Then, take ten percent of the proceeds from all such 'art' and give it to a church..earn your welcome..and hey, graffiti without the illegality. rape is rape..but orgasm is orgasm.
graffeti is an interesting thing as some of it can be truly awsome and tottly art work, but some grafetti is all swear words, human body parts, so and so loves this person just a hole buch of crap drawn by sick minded or retarded people. if graffti is drawn on like tunnell walls or something not on staues and monumontes it's cool. i hate peole who think just cause they can get away with something means it's okay, thaTS LIKE SAYING IF YOU RAPE SOMEONE AND GETAWAY WITH IT IT'S OKAY. and that theres nothing mrorally wrong with it. but hey if you are a true graffeti artist and not a retarded wonabe then rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah um, they ARE a youth group and all, so they should be keeping things to thereselves, considering that it's meant to be involved with the community...
It's extremely unlikely that city officials would endorse such a plan, especially if it is proposed by a group of young people. Maybe this person lives in a really progressive city, one where youth groups are given equal opportunities to enact their plans; if so, great! Have fun changing your world! Perhaps I'm projecting too many of my experiences, but it's always advisable to have back up plans for if the city says the group is just a bunch of kids looking to add to the graffiti "problem."
I was suggesting that this person follow their original plan of gathering young artists, but instead of informing the city, just taking it over and seeing how long it stays up.

i remember a post like this a long time ago called "the great chalk experiment". the idea was to place buckets of chalk around school grounds with signs that say "use me". it would be an awesome way to express ourselves, but most people were worried that it would be abused.
It actually DOES say adam and steve. Thats what you get for reading the translation!
