Just as many people that drink and do drugs listen to Phish and/or Slipknot.

They only look at rap so critically because many rappers put alcohol and marijuana in such high regard in their music.

I like these calm little moments before the storm.

Music doesn't make people have sex and do drugs. Period.

What?! Why isnt this person helping the poor mice? They'll most likely starve or die because they are blind. Is it just me or is there animal curelty with the farmer's wife cutting off their tail? With a carving knife! Dear lord I hope she cleaned it after it. Who ever wrote the song is clearly implying laughter when he/she writes

aeaehaiehaiehaiehaiehaiehaiehoahehaoehoahe

Look at the social background, what those statistics say isn't that people who listen to hip hop are more likely to commit crimes or have social inadaptation problems. It's the other way around, people that come from poor backgrounds and conflicting families are more likely to listen to hip hop as it is easier to identify oneself with the lirics.
This is easy enough to understand, social inequality promotes idealism, and unfavorable conditions are contraproductive towards work etc...
What this means is that when one grows up in a poor family it is less likely for him to develope a work dynamic that will facilitate his ascent to a higher estament of society through effort. Rather the individual is much more likely to develope idealistic tendency's. What happens with hip hop music is that those who have managed to reach a higher level of economic development through the quick break through that a hit song or a contract with a producer provides , constantly profess how shitty their life was before reaching the top. This implies that rapper gangsterism wich inevitably goes with hip hop somehow may pay off. It's not conscious reasoning, but when poor black kids in suburban neighbourhoods listen to rap music constantly they end up taking in that message. Not everyone wants to become a rapper, nonetheless, the superstars in the bussiness do promote socially unacceptable behaviour through some of their lirics. And while we can't blame music for people's actions, of wich everyone is solely and uniquely responsible, we can say that the superstars in the industry, wich are looked up to by thousands of young teens and adults don't use their potential influence over these people to promote values and behaviour that will reflect positively on their lives.

Simple logic "If he made it, Why can't I?"

I'd hire a hitman to choke you on election night just to experience the irony of that statement.

But I won't because I don't like Hilary, either. Not enough to make a completely irrelevant reference to her in a rap thread, but enough to vote for someone else entirely.

Yea its the music. Its not drugs, parents or the other ills of the world. The parents have no responsibilty. People make their own choices and I dont pity them if they screw up because thats their fault. Music/video games/movies are just a convinenet scapegoat for ppl like Hilary Clinton (who will never be president as long as i breath), Jack Thompson and Joe Liberman.

The original draft of The Lord of the Rings featured Chuck Norris instead of Frodo Baggins. It was only 5 pages long, as Chuck roundhouse-kicked Sauron's ass halfway through the first chapter.

I have been listening to rap since as long as i can remember and i have lived with people who have made some bad choices in life, it's just a coincedence that some of them only listen to rap, some of them listen to country and some of them listen to rock, others listen to hip hop, and regea, I personally listen to it all, i dont do drugs, and i dont do other things that are in the music i listen to, i think it's partially how influencial the person is, but it realy does not have much to do with the music, the choices of a teen are usualy based on there life, some can take it like i did and do the opposite of what they've seen, or they can copy it and justify it by saying, but my parents did it, but over all I realy dont think it's the music, music is just something to blame.

i think that rap music is just another type of music. a lot of people think that it causes teens to do bad things and dumb stuff like that. i also think that trisscar had a good point! music only makes you think about what you are really feeling. people are just using music to blame their faults on. its not the music or the rapper or even the lyrics its the environment they are brought up in. for instence the song "Because i got high" by afroman says because i got high a numerous times but that doesnt make me want to go smoke pot! people just dont have anything else to complain about!

i think people just look for things to blame their kid's behavior on. i think the real problem has to to do with families in general. its way easier to write an article on how rap make you do drugs and have sex then that it is to write that its the the failure of our family structures that are driving kids to find acceptance in other places. with the amount of divorces and falling apart of families its hard to grow up and develope healthy relationships. drugs are sought be ppl who are trying to fill their lives with something they're missing. Sex sometimes is the used for the same thing. i listen to rap. and yeah the lyrics are not the greatest. but think of it, if us as teens didn't WANT to listen to it, they wouldn't sell albums, it has to do with the teens already. not the other way around.

haha i hope that made sense. i kinda went a bit too long. :P

J'irai bien.

If i were to question the magizine, I'd ask what music is any better?
If you look at any lyrics of any song you CAN find some thing wrong with it.

For example:
The song Itsy Bitsy Spider!

Itsy Bitsy Spider
Went up the water spout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
So the itsy bitsy spider
Went up the spout again

Why did a spider go up a spout in the first place? Is it just me or the song ends of when he goes up the spout thus continuing in a cycle... to me it seems like this Spider has an OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) for climbing up spouts and getting washed out.. no?

Dont belive me??

Another Example:
Three blind mice:

Three blind mice!
Three blind mice!
See how they run!
See how they run!
They all ran after
The farmer’s wife,
Who cut off their tail
With a carving knife.
Did you ever see such
A sight in your life
As three blind mice?
(repeat)
Three blind mice!
Three blind mice!

What?! Why isnt this person helping the poor mice? They'll most likely starve or die because they are blind. Is it just me or is there animal curelty with the farmer's wife cutting off their tail? With a carving knife! Dear lord I hope she cleaned it after it. Who ever wrote the song is clearly implying laughter when he/she writes, "Did you ever see such a sight in your life?" how awful!

I don't think that's true, yogore. Look at old school rap. It was very much a small section of the music industry. Few people listened to it. And it was so much cleaner and positive than rap is now.

I think rap has got a lot more tame now that it's mainstream.

I don't know about you all, but I have never heard the phrase "sex, drugs and rap".

I hate rap with a passion. I think it's pointless, and stupid, and one of the most untalented genres of music out there (besides country and "emo-core", whatever the **** that's supposed to mean) but some rock, (which is my favorite genre of music, by the way, although technically, my favorite sub-genre is indie. Go Velvet Underground. Rah. Rah.), promotes violence, sexism, rape, drugs, sex, etc., just as much as some rap does. But not all rap promotes those "bad" values, just like not all country music only talks about trucks, drinking, and beating your wife. Stop with the stereotypes, people. It's gets old real ****ing quick.

I agree that MOST rap IS about drugs, money, etc.
Not all of it, though! If you hate ALL rap, please take the time to find Nas's song "I Can".
It inspires me and makes me want to act and get others to act. It's the best rap song ever! Don't say ALL rap sucks...only rap about shallow and vain thing sucks and that's not the only kind there is, believe it or not!

DMX as non-violent? Hahahaha...

"Wit the non-stop, pop pop and stainless steel"

"But no matter how many cats I break bread wit
I'll break who you sendin me"

Look, anyone who calls rap a bad influence is completely ignorant of what rap is.
