1. Just because a person uses recreational drugs does not make them any less mentally capable than a person who does not. I know stoners who get straight A's and discuss the philisophy of Moby Dick with me.
2. The reason people are drug tested on the job, is because they are usually responsable for other peoples wellbeing in some sense, or in the stores well being. You cannot compare the need for a ride operator at Six Flags to be tested as to that of a pitcher for a highschool baseball team.

Random drug testing is a huge violation of privacy. I am part of the school newspaper and when researching we found that it isn't even successfull. All a student has to say is no because it is random, not based on suspicion. Students who stay away from those kind of things do not need to be subjected to that. Not only will it make them feel bad but they could undergo a lot of riddicule from other students even if they didn't do anything wrong.

Our highschool wanted to do the same thing and found that it is useless because if they want to test you all you have to say is no. They can not force you to be tested unless the have reasonable suspicions and random checking isnt based on suspicion. Bottom line is that its a violation of privacy and I can gaurantee you that the teachers and school staff wont have to go through random drug tests only the students how is that fair?

My school must be run by the average American adult. They don't let us carry around bookbags, so we're forced to keep our belongings in a locker. And, since the lockers are paid for by them, they are allowed to search them at will.
Funny story: Last year, these drug dogs were searching a girl's locker, and one of them smelled a ham sandwhich. The dog did something to get the police man's attention, and they went through all of her stuff. Everyone made a big scene about it, and she thought she was in so much trouble.

quote: the nurse doesn't even ask if you're on medicine
Well that's wrong. You should question this if it ever happens to you. Go to the principal, board of ed. ect... It's also not the schools job to police the student body; it's the parents job. But my school has the power to: - Test anyone they suspect of using drugs
- Bring in search dogs to check the lockers (which they do every once in a while)
- Search a students belongings and locker
So i really don't see why they need to go any further.

Okay, but like at my school, the nurse doesn't even ask if you're on medicine, so if you are, you're automatically out of sports and band.

hmmmm... lets think of a way to encourage kids NOT to join extracurriculars. It's none of the schools business anyway what students are doing away from campus. If someone can keep their grades high enough to participate in sports or other activities, plus attend practices, club meetings, and competitions then it doesnt sound like there's a problem if they have a little fun on the weekends. I am so glad to be a senior.

There's an easier way to tell who does drugs. Ask one of the students. I could point out each and every person in my class that does any sort of drug. I know it's kind of wrong to say it, but it's painfully obvious.

Public school has to allow everyone a comfortable environment to learn in. They don't really even have to have extracurricular activities, but they usually do and just as they can refuse anyone who can't run fast enough, can't act well enough, or cant keep to a rhythm they can refuse anyone who does drugs or hangs around people who do drugs. In some cases drugs could hinder someone's performance anyway. So it's quite simple... if you want to do an extracurricular activity with the school that ****ing bad, just don't do the damn drugs or seek help if you cant do that. It's also, as you can see, a good method for sifting out the people who aren't entirely willing to commit.
As for the money issue... yea, like buy better lunches for you kids... like with soda... cause getting you guys fat is much more important than getting you off drugs (hey caffine too!).

I guess I'm for it, because after all, the programs have rules against drug use. They should be able to check if their rules are being followed.

Schools underestimate the druggies. Drug addicts can be quite elusive. It's kind of funny, really...

what people dont relieze is it cost a lot of money to get the drug test and ethigther the school or the parents have to pay 1 if the school has to pay then they're wasting valuble money that could be used on something better 2 if the parents have to pay they dont have a chioce if they want the test done and if they r not finacally ready for something like it it would be trouble and i have one last piont if they test for drugs they should also test for blood alchol levels and go through childrens lockers to make sure that they dont have cigeretts soon any thing u bring to school will become their propertie thats wrong

I don't think it's unconstitutional, although I don't agree with it, but I guess I'm used to it, because at my job, I have to do it, so it's not a big deal anymore to me. Either don't do drugs or don't play sports. (I'd go with the latter if I was you.)
