just breathe! first, let's look at what we're arguing about! avril lavigne! everyone's getting all angry over if she is or isn't real. does anyone really care? if it upsets you so much, don't listen to her! there are lots of radio stations, and they have different stuff!

if you like her, good. if you don't, good. that's what makes people great: differences. avril can be what she wants to be, and do what she wants to do. if she wants to sing country, fine by me. if she wants to be punk, go ahead.

it's her life, let her do what she wants with it.

Oh my gosh! You mean Avril Lavigne isn't really what she acts like! She's actually a… (gulp) prep?! I really care!

Ok i know i said avril wasnt punk and that she was just a project of the mtv exsecs well she isnt. Actually she did sing country in her school but only beccause it was for a comedy act in her school's talent show. Also she was kicked out of a restarant (along with SUM 41) for destroying some stuff and they wer supposedly giving wedgies
and isnt that what makes a punk- rebeling against rules? (that was a questuion i was not implying anything)

Still debating that Avril is the new project the MTV execs working on. Yup she is, and I feel it's stupid and pointless classifying people as punks preps goths, whatever.
What'll that do to help society?
Nothing. Now talk about something worthwhile.

I think you are trying to dig to far into a shallow pop singer. Here is an equation that expresses what avril is about.

Avril = $$$

i'm really not a fan of this whole "punk" thing.
it's really big @ my school. everyone think they're "punk" but, they're not. and they insult everyone that isn't like them. Like, if you say you like rap they totally attack you and say "o ur wrong rap sucks" and all this stuff. it get's really old.
i think avril's music is ok but, i don't like, what she "stands for"

...alittle ot of avril.. but the tie thing!

last year twoards the begining of last year, I wore a tie as a belt. hey, it's works. Then I saw a "tie belt" at Debs... =0( hmmph.. they didn't even credit me wink

anyway, I agree with outspoken on the clothes classify the person deal. Some people want to make it seem like it does and I mean, some friends dress alike, but if you dress up in all black, that doesn't nessicarily make you "gothic".

(sorry, I'm working on the debating thing... I'm really bad at stating out points... I always think of what the other points are gonna say.)

The popular kids who don't know better than to pay that amount for thrift clothes. I fail to see the stereotype in that, unless you're talking about the popular kids thing, which I didn't mean to put in there, so sorry.

I really think that you (Monica) need to calm down. Really, this much stress for a girl your age is not healthy, not at all. Just breathe, eh?

She is a product of corporate BS and has made a total mockery of anything truly punk. People on this board, and the Punk vs. Preps board seem to think that just because you dress punk means you're a punk. Your clothes do not determine if you are punk, it's your mindset, ideals, way of life, etc.
As penmagic shared in today's history lesson, punk originated in the UK, and there's nothing comparable to the British punks (gimme a british accent and a mohawk, talk about the *sexiest* combination!!! :-D)

Dumars, I love wearing ties! Generally not with tees though, I've got tons of dress shirts (from daddy being a businessman) and occasionally, I'll just wild it up a bit. And yes, this predates Miss Lavigne.
As for Good Will, the one we have in town is closing because they jacked up their prices too much, and so no one (excluding the popular kids who don't know better) shops there. St. Vinnie's (St. Vincent de Paul) is the place to be. Last time I was there, I found a very beautiful shirt with the periodic table on it, c'mon now, you can't beat that. And dressing like a bum, well, have you ever tried wearing some wonderfully worn in jeans and cozy broken in wool sweater? In the winter, that's like my standard uniform. I mean, throw in some chucks, and you've got it made.

Avril isn't punk or pop anything. I think she is herself. No one is really preppy or punky. Everyone has a little bit of everything inside. Thats even what Avril says in her songs, you know, be yourself and stuff.

I just take issue with the fact that Avril calls herself punk when in reality she is very far from it.

Can we all say poser?

Now, now ... The Ramones?

Isn't that exactly the sort of place punk DOES thrive? Where there's actually an establishment in place to rebel AGAINST?

Hmm.. okay, wouldn't this article be best suited for the "Celeb/Star" forum instead of this one?

Anyway, I don't like Avril Lavigne. She's too pop with a "rebel" twist. I really do think the whole wearin'-a-tie thing is cheesy, but that's her style.

I don't really like saying someone's a "prep" or "poser" or "punk" or whatever. That's sterotyping, in my opinion. I don't think she can sing that well, but I bet her 15 minutes of fame will be up soon. And the people who don't like her music, like myself, have the choice of not listening to her music. wink

She's not Punk!
She's Pop (with a very slight edge to it). How on Earth could you mistake her for Punk?? If she's claiming to be so she's very disillusioned.
Wow, another Brit on the boards!
I suppose us from the UK can feel pretty smug about Punk, it largely originated from here in the 70s, in a big movement, but as BruceLee said it seems to have lost its meaning since then! I don't think American (or Canadian) bands capture the Punk spirit particularly well. There's a slight corporate shine to it all, and the whole idea of Punk is to challenge authority and the establishment. America is a very capitalist, pro-establishment country and it is not the kind of environment where Punk can thrive.
It's not just about peircings and dyed hair you know. Avril Lavigne doesn't even have that!
Punk?? Pull the other one! roll eyes

Because of people like lavigne punk has lost its meaning, what happened to anarchy. Telling your mother to **** off or listening to popunk or pulling some lame prank on a preppie does not make you a rebel. Real punk music is shown in the likes of Rancid, NOFX and Goldfinger. Looking at this "craze" in your American schools is pretty funny.

I honestly have no idea where the whole punk/prep thing came from. It's a pretty new phenomenon. I was in high school a short five years ago and no one ever used the words "punk" or "prep" to define somebody's personality. They were used (and hardly ever used, by the way) to describe clothing in the case of "prep" and music in the case of "punk", and even then only in very very very extreme cases of over indulgence in Gap purchases or misuse of black eyeliner. I think the whole think is kind of freaking stupid. The people who are called "punk" today have so very little to do with what traditional punk even is that it's borderline offensive--not that I'm by any means even vaguely "punk", but we're totally misusing these words and with very little purpose. This is just dumb.

I dont know when wearing a tie with a t shirt became cool but man does it look stupid! Besides I bet she makes good will happy! Do any of you remember when wearing a tie around your head was cool. If you do that was a stupid look as well. If you cant dress your self any better than someone who is a bum on the streets with only the clothes on their back then you need help. I know its cool to rebel but making yourself look like a slob is stupid.

Erm, you all seem to be missing the point that she is not 'punk'. Her music is just typical pop in slightly different guise. And she apparently claims to have begun/initiated the concept of wearing a tie with a normal shirt and/or as an anti-establishment type gesture, in addition to playing pretentious pop music. roll eyes
