Question:
Ok, today my school brought the drug dogs in, and searched everyones locker, book bag, and around cars. Some days my school's staff members will even search random lockers looking for drugs and what not. There has never been any kind of drug problem at my school, ever. So my question is: is it ok for them to just go searching through your personal property and what not without your permission?

Choices:
on one side i guess it's ok because the lockers belong to the school, and the book bags and stuff are on school property.
on the other hand it's still your stuff, not the schools, and the peoples lockers they randomly search how do we students really know it's random. all the teachers know the few kids who get into troubled stuff like that.

If kidz your age didn't have drugz in the first place they wouldn't have a reason to search your thingz. Has there been any student in your school that was cott with drugs yet?

Wow...

We don't have searches in school unless, probably (I wouldn't know), somebody was suspected of having something bad. That's American efficiency for ya.

___What do the "innocent" ones have in their lockers that they are afraid of being found anyways? Do they steal from you or something? What's the big deal?

Well, the locker and some of your books are school property but they should also respect your properties. I mean, I put a lot of sh*ts in my locker that can be only seen by me and they just open it up and let the dogs sniff it. But it's for the students' own health, some students might not be 'clean' and maybe need some rehab or something.

I think searches are fine though sometimes can be embarassing depending on what personal stuff you have. Would you rather be killed by some kid carrying a weapon no one knew about because schools couldn't do searches? I know I would rather be safe in school than be shot.

i usually wont give them MONEY because you never know what they are going to use it for. they might use if for drugs, alcohol, etc. i usually buy them a sandwich or a cup of coffee or something, i believe that might be better than giving them money. but i always want to help them.

Whether or not it is a law, it is NOT fair to search kids' purses or bookbags just when they feel like it. But before anyone gets confused, you have to have a warrant to search peoples houses or cars. (Unless something is in public view) In school, since a warrant would take long to get, they can search your stuff under reasonable circumstances. They should be able to search a locker randomly because they own it. If you put drugs in your locker then thats YOUR fault and you can't do anything bout that. But you own your purse or bookbag or whatever, so unless the teachers have a reasonable cause they shouldn't be able to search your stuff.

Let the dogs snif it out, not just dump out eveyrtihng when you feel like it.
it might be policy that they have no choice but to follow.
But I do feel there is SOME privacy because once i had to stuff my backpack full of everything i needed for a trip so we wouldn't have to apy luggage. I was the ONE person they had to choose to empty the contents of my backpack. It's not fun hvaing hundreds of people crowding around curiously watching security rummage through your personal item and flip through the page in your journal to makes sure nothing's between the pages. And then you konw your parents try to see if there's something they can catch in it so it's real embarassing, like being on a stage and realizing your costume's gone.
We almost missed the flight with me trying to get my stuff to fit in my bag again.
I never went to the airport with my "God bless America" Button on my carry- on again Razz

I know it's a little extreme.... Book bags aren't really any of their buissness! And when I have embarrassing stuff in my locker or something, all of a sudden the staff'll totally empty our my locker!! It's embarrassing!! And then around cars? What students have in their cars is NONE of the school's buissness!! I mean if you keep a pack of cigarrettes in your car to smoke when you get home (BAD IDEA!!!! but still your (bad) choice) It's NONE OF THEIR BUISSNESS!!!!!

This could be inacurate information, but I recall reading in a magazine that staff/police don't have the right to search a students locker unless they have a reason for suspecting your keeping drugs, or something like that. Because now that I think about it... wouldn't that bean invasion your right to privacy?

Go on strike! Lol, no that never works. You would probably end up getting suspended. I would try to first understand why they are searching lockers on a regular basis. Maybe you don't know the whole story...Maybe you do, I don't know, I don't go to your school.

Maybe you could write complain letter...or talk to the board of education. Nothings really comming to mind right now, but if it does I'll let you know. Good luck!

Trust me, I have had discussions with teachers about this issue and they say the school has the right to look through students' stuff if they think someone is in possession of drugs, weapons, or something else against the rules.

I think it's okay because it is school property and they can do whatever to keep the school a drug-free, violence-free area. If you don't want them to go through your personal stuff, wouldn't it be easier to leave the personal stuff at home?

yes that was me and someone else also started a thread about that story too. Do I think its right for police to search through our personal stuff. No. But they do have the right legally to do so, so not much we can do about it except....fight the system and listen to Bob Marleys burning and looting song.
