people who take race as an issue or think that certain races act a certainway are narrow minded sh1t-eaters.

Look at Colin Powell. The CNN photo of him I saw today was lighter-skinned than a lot of the white farmers I've met. And don't forget Michael Jackson.

Be who ever you wanna be and don't be ashamed to stand up for what you believe, even if you stand-up alone. Don't let anyone else limit you, you set the limits yourself.

In the meantime; You Go Girl!

I understand what you're saying...but times are changing.

quote:
Aight...have u ever heard someone from another country try to speak english? They usually end up putting an adjective affter the noun or leaving out a couple of words-- ("what you want" instead of"What do you want").

Nowadays, children across the world are being taught our language. I went to China last year, and almost every single one of those kids had better grammar than me. I guess because of our increasing effect on the world, people are being taught the language. While I understand your history lesson on how ebonics was created, it stil ldoesn't explain why we as a people use it. I think most of us use it for comfort. That is really our language and no one elses....

I'm 17yr brown skinned african american brotha

Aight...have u ever heard someone from another country try to speak english? They usually end up putting an adjective affter the noun or leaving out a couple of words-- ("what you want" instead of"What do you want"). Although native english speakers may correct their foreign conterparts when togehter, amongst themselves, foreigners mirror eachother and go on creating a social acceptable 'version' of the english language. (I've seen it amongst arab and african friends of mine)---OK--stay with me---Now imagine, this concept held true, that the foreigns who must now adopt this new langauge to communicate are systmatically segrageted from mainstream english speakers through Slavery & Jim Crow for about 360 yrs (1600-1960 begining of civil rights revolution). Thats the womb from which the african american 'versions' of english language(mainstream ebonics, gulla and, creo) were born
-----I talk alot sorry!------
So YES it is "traditionally" african americna to speak "ebonics" because of our history! However we our amongst the first generations who grew up in america without 'overt' goverment inforced racism and so old tradions are being broken! Its no longer 'acting' 'black' or 'white'. The way in which most people speak is determined now more so by their economic standing--Poor or Rich with the middle class able to emulate both.

Code Switchen is the futre! When in Rome you "act" like a Roman!

umm and yeah he was wrong to put it to ya like that weren't for hangin up on him!

Okay, I live in the south (Texas) and a lot of people around here are extremely prejudiced. My dad, for one, won't let a black friend of mine come over to our house, nor will he let a white friend who has a black family member (by marriage or whatever) come over. If I ever went out with and/or married a black person, he would disown me. He's not as prejudiced about Asians or Hispanics or whatever, but he still doesn't approve. I don't really have many (make that any) black friends, and I could never see myself marrying a black guy. However, I don't really see myself as prejudiced, and I don't think that black or white or any other people have to act a certain way. Also, I have no problem with interracial marriage. I'll admit, if I see a white woman with black kids, it'll turn my head for a minute, but I won't be rude. It's not really that it bothers me, it's that I'm not used to it. How surprising, with such an open and friendly environment in my hometown. I'd also like to add that a lot of the black people as if not more prejudiced than the whites, although they might have a good reason to be. Also, it seems like the black kids in school are always accusing teachers of hating black people, but most of the complaints don't really seem legitimate. One teacher, for instance, was actually engaged to a black man. When she told them that, it kind of shut them up. I'm sure that sometimes there really is a problem, but it seems like a lot of times their just crying wolf, so to speak. Anyway, see ya later. Jen.

Ah, I love the South. where people really do mostly conform to racial stereotypes (hopefully everyone realizes I was being sarcastic about loving that). Just look at my high school: All the black students want to go to the university of Tennessee or another high-ranked athletic school for college. The vast majority of the white students are ignorant rednecks. (On a side note, I get made fun of for this by northern friends). The Asians are the only ones who defy stereotypes; they're all stupid! But then all the Asians I know outside of school want to go to Harvard, and will take Calculus by 11th grade at latest...
Muchof this I suspect is the result of stereotyping. I did ask someone in my World History class why he hated blacks once, and he said it's because he was brought up that way, without seeing how ludicrous it was to hate people b/c his parents do. Want to change the world? Bring your kids up right, instead of failing like all the ex-hippie parents and raising a generation that's really just as racist as the last.

That's weird that he'd say that and i don't think it was right, either. Race is just the color of your skin; it has nothing to do with your personality, how you talk, what you like, how you dress or how you act. That's like saying someone should act "skinny" or "fat" or "tall" or "blue-eyed".

This is extremley controversial. And to say someone is acting a color is stupid and stereotypical. Just because certain people say a phrase..doesnt make them a color. Ive heard white and black guys call friends *****s. And stuff like that. Ive seen white guys wearing Air Forces and Air Jordans. White Guys in Fubu and black guys in abercrombie. So to say that you should act a certain color is EXTREMLEY sterotypical. People should act as they please as long as it hurts no others. So just be yourself.

to plastikculture: It is really very odd, because I didn't find out about labels until.....about 3 months ago. I think they're fascinating, but race.....that's just dumb, because it's like a notebook, no matter if it's black or pink, you don't know what's inside until you look inside.....

i dont know how people can actually act their race..."acting" is a really odd word...i can "act" any way i want...i can talk white or black, ya know? most people do...a lot of people will actually mix black and white when they talk to people...

quote:

but one day, this guy i used to like, who i now dislike more than ever, called me and i was talking to him (i didn't wanna ) and all of a sudden he's all... why are u actin white?? i'm all.. im not actin white, even if i were, what would it matter to you? i could act like how i wanna act? and he's all... no, you can't, if your white, u act white, if yor black, u act black. that's how it goes. and im all... no, this is how it goes, and i hung up.

i didn't think it was right of him to say that - do u think im wrong for thinking that? and what do u think about how people act according to their race and such??

ok, no, i dont think that you were wrong because he cant say how you are s'posed to act, especially if there is no real "way to act" either white or black or any other ethnicity...and i dont think it is possible to "act your race"...does that help or answer your question?

Define "normal".
I'm Chinese. Am I supposed to act Chinese? Now, I don't know what that means, exactly, but if you find out, please inform me so I can start "acting my race".

Hold up! There is no such thing as acting "black" or "white". Now, you can ct proper or ghetto but you cannot act like a color. It's not possible, because it's just like acting like a number. You can't act three can you? And I see no problem with people acting how they want. Personally, I talk like this:

Me: Mommy, like I really need to go the mall cuz I'ma be needin some new Air Forces.

Mom: Baby, you have three pairs already. (note how proper my mother speaks)

Me: Mmmmooooommmmm! Why do you always got to make me go through this?! All I want is a orange and white pair! That is all I want I swear! Is that too much to ask?

Mom: Right now, yes it is. Now please go upstairs and resume your homework.

Everyone I know acts different and it has nothing to do with our color. Yes, there are stereotypes, but they don't define who you are. If you want to speak proper, and that'll will help you go alot further in life, then do it! Don't let and ******* of a guy like the one you were talking to on the phone stop you!

quote:
"Hey, b___h, where we goin' to eat at?" - black

hehe, joey...*sigh* you and your generalized assumptions....i've actually said that exact line before, and guess what? I'm white. Now i'll type like i talk...

sups? hey *****, what's shakin'. Y'all ur pissin' me off.

but i guess i'm just the exception to the rule.... to be honest, in the rural south, you can usually tell someone's race by the way they talk... but the same concept does not hold up in the urban and suburban areas.
