There's no disclaimer in the constitution that says, oh, by the way, this only applies if you're 18. I realize that schools don't recognize my rights, and I disagree with that policy. The supreme court has been forcing schools to recognize students rights for years (like Tinker vs Des Moines for examle). And I shouldn't have to decide between droping out and keeping my rights. Why am I the only one who wants my rights? Why do you all conform to the status quo so easily?
The Supreme Court has also ruled that in some respects rights are flexible. Seriously, wearing a T-Shirt in a high school isn't the purpose of the 1st Amendment. Don't trivalize it like that. Not saying you personally, just commenting on the whole thread. Gross rights violations won't fly. But using the 1st Amerndment because the school's cramping your fashion style? Please.

quote: Who cares if we are under the age of 18? It doesn't mean we shouldn't get the same freedom as everyone else does, seeing as I am an american citizen.
You are an American citizen, but you are a child. The facts of life are that there are rules, there will always be rules and you will follow them or face the consequences. Even after you are legally an adult. It's not like when you hit 18, you can suddenly do whatever you want. The Portland State University kids in my apartment building seem to think that, but they are ignoring the building's rules, and now they're all being kicked out next year and they can't come back. If your school says you can't wear a certain T-Shirt. Take it off. Shut up. And get over it. Because nobody but you gives a shit. Once you go to college and experience the real world, as in without your parents to hide under, you'll see your "Freedom of Speech" being violated and oppressed all the time, everywhere you go, 24/7. It's unavoidable. I think high schools should stop either teaching kids about the Constitution, or at least start explaining what it really means. Because it seems like whenever they hear that phrase "Free Speech" they automatically think it applies to them. High schools make you follow rules, because they're getting you ready for life. So, stop whining. quote: Why do you all conform to the status quo so easily? Most of us are over 18. So it doesn't affect us anymore. And the ones that aren't are very wise kids who have accepted reality. You can learn a thing or two from them.

I agree with you that our freedoms shouldn't stop when we walk through the door of school. Who cares if we are under the age of 18? It doesn't mean we shouldn't get the same freedom as everyone else does, seeing as I am an american citizen. We should talk more. IM me at xohollie126xo

I have to agree with the random laughing of this thread. Even at the age of 18 when you finally have all your "rights" you still have like 60 years more to live and express yourslef, they limit your rights for your own good and saftey get over it.

good lord, why does the youth of today feel the need to bitch about every thing that doesnt go their way. get over it ok. schools set rules for a reason like everyone has said, you have to create a suitable enviornment for everyone to be able to learn in. if that doesnt suit you then ask about being home schooled. and like clpo said, in college the limitation no longer applies (well sort of) that doesnt mean you can go around saying "kill all the jews" and not have something said or done about it, but colleges have alot more choices as to what to do to you than HS. and are you less of a person? no you just havent fully earned everything that say an 18 year old has. and likewise people that are 18 cant do alot of things that 21 year olds can. get over it, because i guarentee your school already has

For one thing, I'm a college student, so the limitation no longer applies. And second, I managed to survive throughout my public schooling without even coming close to needing my full rights. Of course, I wasn't as vocal or demanding as some of my fellow students, but I was there (fourth time) to learn, not to express myself. I did that outside of school. Or in band. But you don't really need freedom of speech to play an instrument.

No. I was stating my reasons for agreeing with the schools for "taking away our rights".

I never said that. I just answered your question as to why I didn't care as much anymore. Honestly, if you think you deserve rights, take it up with your principal. It's the best way to go about things. (Or at least to start things). P.s. Read your handbook. Mine in high school had what rights I was given. Yours should too.

I'm 19. I legally have my rights. But if you think you should have your rights, start by reading your school handbook and setting up a meeting with your school principal to discuss anything that you disagree with, or that you think is a violation of your rights. All schools really want to do, when it comes down to it, is to try and create a safe and respectful learning environment for everyone. To get there, everyone has to give a little.

Hahaha. Yeah right. However I like knowing that if someone ever tries to fuck with me agian they will be either expelled or suspended. Since I don't go around harassing people then I really have nothing to worry about. And the 'so called "rights"' thing was because Amp is right. You aren't a full citizen until you are 18
