The greatest among all tips is just to enjoy yourself! Don't worry about making friends right away if you don't have any pre-existing friends or if you're new, you will. Focus and study! This is where your grades really count for something. As a freshman, it's not as big of a deal, but it's better to show consistency all the way through. Always study for finals-they can make or break your grade. As an upperclassman, focus on your studies. This could give you a great scholarship from a recruiting college. Overall, don't freak out. High school should be a fun experience. And although you may be bored with your classes or stressed with your friends, keep perservering with a positive attitude because it'll be over soon.
All you need is love.

I'm a junior in highschool, so there's your perspective. Make friends with your teachers. Chances are if they're having fun teaching you, you'll have a lot more fun learning it, and will actually probably learn a lot more. If there's something that you want to share with your teacher, you can stay after class and tell them. Take notes, in whatever way makes most sense to you. I always take notes in color, because it helps me. Some people are abstract and thought webs help them. I'm kind of a linear person, so bullets and tables help me a lot. Be friendly to everyone around, and don't be afraid to be yourself. If that means the quiet person in the corner, go ahead and be it. If that means the controlled class-clown, be it. Be prepared, don't tick off your teachers, and have a great time. Don't get discouraged if someone doesn't seem to like you the first day. My first two or so months of highschool, my stand partner (in orchestra) couldn't stand me. We ended up being best of friends, and we tease each other about all sorts of things now (me being a Mormon, him needing a new girlfriend every other month, I am now pretty much his feminine advice column). Advanced classes (I'm an IB diploma candidate) are not so much about being smart as being studious. You won't last if you think that you can get by on your IQ. You CAN'T. If you're studious, you'll make it. If you're smart, it certainly helps, but it won't get you through it. And DON'T CHEAT. No matter how tempting, and no matter how small the assignment. Don't do it. I've never done it (I'm kind of a goody all around), but I saw some people get seriously busted for it in my class. I'm telling you now, it's not worth it. Read your textbooks. I know that a lot of kids think that the teacher will explain this or that in class, but don't always count on it in highschool. They won't always. If you're told to read something in your textbook, read it. If you don't understand a concept or an event or theory in your book, especially if your teacher didn't lecture about it, go and ask them. Chances are, they'll be happy to help and they'll take the time to make sure you understand. If you feel nervous to do that, as a nerd, and more importantly, as the friend of the math legends of the school (of which, I am not one of), a good portion of them are happy to help you out if you don't understand. But learn which ones are and which are. Some of them will just go "Oh my goodness, you mean you don't get it?" (I'm friends with one of those), some will say, "Umm...well you just kind of...It just is" (I'm extremely good friends with one of those), and then there's the type "Oh sure. It's simple really. All it is is..." (I'm very good friends with two of these type). If you still don't get it, ask one of the ones that couldn't explain it if you could see their work. If they trust you not to copy it, they'll probably let you, and sometimes that helps a lot. School starts on Wednesday for me...yeah, I know, it's kind of late.
Just because nobody understands you, that doesn't mean you're artistic.

I'm going to start high school as well. The only good thing is that I'm friends with a lot of the others in high school already. I am nervous about classes though. I'm in all the advanced classes so it should be tough.

Your gunna meet alot of awsome and some not so awsome....try not to piss people off but dont let people push you around. Always try your best and when things seam to hard talk to someone about it. Go to dances, have fun do whats best for you don't over load your self clubs and sports..make sure always time for your friends and your work or it will get really stressfull. Stay away from drugs and stuff I never used it and was fine making friends, who ever tells you you need that stuff to make friends is LIEING . Just be your self.

Actually, on a de-hollywood-ised level there is truth in the movie. Especially if you're friends with the drama dept. kids. As Tim O'brien says, Fiction is often truer than truth.

At the same time, though, don't stress out too much and worry about grades too much. Make sure to enjoy your life and balance work and play. Most colleges like to see people who had fun as well as worked hard and became well-rounded.

Never be afraid to approach your teacher if you find your grade is lower than you want it to be. Most teachers will work with you. I used to avoid talking to teachers about my grades and things but know I find that it helps. Also, Watch what you say and whom your saying it to... Watch Mean Girls

Thanks. That helped. My high school starts in August . But end in May quote: Originally posted by Meagan87: If you all are assigned individual lockers, don't offer to share with a friend (no matter how unfortunate a location theirs is in). It can cause SO many problems...
Become friendly with your teachers. You may not want to go all teacher's pet (not that there's anything wrong with it...) but having them on your side will help enormously.
Work on projects/papers and study for tests in advance so that you are not waiting until the last minute to do everything. (And if you succeed in doing this, let me know your trick...)
Buy your own calculator for math.
If you ever get the opportunity to pick a seat, know that teachers pay a lot of attention to where students choose. The back means that you're there to goof off with friends. The front center means you are a bit of a geek. I've found that the safest place is along the side about 2-3 rows back.
Take some academic electives to get yourself thinking about what you want to do after high school, but allow your self a complete blow-off class once in awhile.
Don't show up on the first day of school without paper and pencil. You will be forced to borrow them from someone and forever be known as the person who wasn't even prepared for class on the first day of school.
Eat lunch. Many people in high school opt to just gab all through lunch and not actually eat anything (or they just eat french fries and call it a lunch). Eating a relatively balanced lunch is good for your body and good for your mind.
Get involved in extracurriculars, either at school or in your church or community. It's a great way to make some friends outside of just your classes and make some great memories.
Smile a lot. Be friendly to everyone and treat everyone you come in contact with with respect. It can be pretty difficult, but when that respect is reciprocated, you will feel great about yourself. Don't be afraid to chat with someone you don't really know all that well, you don't have to become best friends, but it is nice to have someone in your classes you are friendly with...you never know when you'll have a group project or need someone to borrow notes from.
Just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean that you should. Do you really want to go through your life being exactly like everyone else?
Be yourself. Relax. Have fun. Study hard. Let me tell you, those four years, blink and you miss them.
(I had fun with this post...can you tell?)
