So, i was just replying to a discussion about punks and preps, and i was wondering, what does everyone, who gives labels such as punk, think really qualifies someone to be a punk.

I'm amazed. A newbie with common sense. Way to go.

Bauhaus, Good Charlotte, NOFX, and Pennywise should all become extinct or blown off the earth. They suck.

1.Just because 'punk' isn't the exact same as it was a long time ago doesn't mean it is dead, just changed.
2.If you have no place else to shop, in a town of about 9000 we try to buy things at other places than walmart, but sometimes you don't really have a choice.
3.No, all those bands suck.

No. I have a lot of 'punk' friends who shop at Wal-Mart, have cell phones and eat McDonalds. If you added vegitarians, non-drinkers, etc.. you would then be getting into more of the straight-edge type.

I don't like the whole labels thing, but when you say punk now a days, I get an image of a kid wearing clothes from Hot Topic. True punk is so long dead.

Punks = teenagers with uncontrollable raging hormones that feel the need to **** off people why not realizing that people are not mad when they laugh at you.

well labels are here so someone can feel better than somebody esle. we all live in this stuck up world that we all must learn to cope with.
but some people dare to be different. (outcast) yet another label, so why does this even matter? i don't know Roll Eyes

That was just the old days when they had to do it out of necessity. and any punk that does that these days is probably doing it for attention

well thats what im trying to get at. Nobody fits any sort of label besides their name. (i suppose you could call a name an individual label.)

I don't really like the use of labels at all. Most are based on the clothes you wear/the way you look.

One day, you may label me a prep. The next you may label me punk. The next you may label me a jock. I just wear what I feel like wearing and I happen to like a lot of different styles. A label doesn't fit me and usually other people don't completely fit their tight little category.

Anyways, most people see "punks" as what bauhaus said and here are some other factors that are considered: different vibrant colors of hair, safety pins, those rubber bracelets, and basically anything that could be considered "different." As opposed to just wearing a skirt and a top, a punk might wear a homemade, slightly frayed looking skirt and a top with maybe just one strap and some safety pins or something like that.
