Yet, kids like elementary and middle schoolers climb around a lot. Under the seats, over the seats, across the aisle, hanging on the windows... I'm not making this stuff up. Maybe seatbelts would be a good idea.

I'm just repeating the most common reason I've heard. Although, it could be said that they pack them in so tight to keep the side-to-side flying from happening...I'm obviously no expert on school bus safety.

That is, assuming the accident is one that jerks you forward. As most tractor-trailer and bus drivers will tell you is that most bus accidents involve flipping, tilting, and tipping. This means little Johnny goes flying to his left (the window) or the right (into other students/the air.) Seat belts aren't necessary, but I understand why people advocate for their usage.

School buses don't need seatbelts. The seats are so close together for a reason: if an accident occurs, the seat in front of you will keep you from going anywhere. Adding a seatbelt won't really make the bus any safer.
