http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1775.html This provides a quick run-down of what FGM is. It is rather shocking stuff, so if you are easily upset I wouldn't go there. It isn't overly graphic, and simply provides an explanation using correct scientifc terms, but could still offend.
I was circumcised when I was 12 because a doctor lied and said that I needed it done (the fuller truth is on my Xanga [same name])
About a year and a half later I had lost about 90% of my sexual pleasure and my orgasms are gone forever.
Circumcision started in America to keep boys from masturbating (m@$turb@ting. They thought that guys would run out of semen and boys enjoying themselves was a bad thing.
People still think that way.
It doesn't work, it just take away the sexual sweetness
It's weird to think that people want boys to respect girls, but show no respect for boys.
Men and women have equal rights. Women have the right to their on bodies and men have that same right.
Almost everwhere FGM, MGM is there. FGM and MGM both keep their victims from having sexual pleasure.
The idea that one is wore because it removes more is an excuse that should be ignored.
P.s. boys go into shock when they are being circumcised so that's why they shut up. A lot of them won't feed after it's done.
Also, America has been mutilating for a long time and we have one of the highest AIDS rates.
The rates of AIDs, prostate cancer, and many other things that circumcision is said to prevent, are HIGHER in countries that circumcise, or in countries where alot of the men are circumcised.
This all make me so sad.
P.p.s.It takes a VERY sick person to watch a baby be mutilated and say no big deal.
The reasons for FGM and MGM are the same. They started the same and they are the same.
The reason people give for both a the same also "it happened to me" "just beacuse" "it's cleaner"
Those are all lies.

Read "Possesing the Secret of Joy," by Alice Walker. It gives a description (while fictional, but heavily fact-based and reliable) of the emotional, mental, and physical effects of female genital mutilation.
Just because something is a custom or tradition does not make it right. This is custom that cannot be justified in any way. Think of the girls who have no choice in the matter and are forced to undergo such a brutal "passage into womanhood." However, I wonder...in a culture where many people vehemently agree with this disgusting custom, what would happen if a group of women were to speak out about this? Also, what can we do to stop it (besides just sending money). It is horrible and something should be done to stop it.
OH...my gosh. I think I am going to throw up. Reading like, three of these posts, and about the first paragraph of a website is enough to make me be sick. This is relpusive, wrong, and BARBARIC. that's the best word I cant think of. This is awful, you guys. Awful. I don't care how *nice* the US is this is disgusting and Africa is screwed anyways...why can't people DO something about this? Why doesnt someone go yell at the countries that do this anyways? Bush or ambassadors? This should become an issue because this is...living h-ell. Can't you see that? If the US doesn't stop it, if WE don't stop it, who do you think will? The Canadian Mounties, maybe? Gross, you guys. Horrible nasty h-ell.
Okay...so I'm not quite understanding what female circumcision is, and although I'll probably be cringing after I find out, could someone send me a Noisemail explaining it to me, where the words won't be edited. Thanks, if someone can.
Genital mutilation is never okay and should never be practiced...it is exactly what it claims to be...MUTILATION!! To think that a girl's rights are so easily taken away, and usually be her mother or sisters is greatly disturbing and should be put to an end at all costs!
gemini is right, the whole point of this is that the women aren't happy. Of course, I don't think that our government/armed forces should try to stop it, but I do think that human's rights groups should. It's a horrible practice; try reading Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker, it basically outlines the deep sexual/emotional problems experienced by women this has happened to.
Actually, the controversy is because many women have no choice in being circumcised. Body piercing is a choice, tattooing is voluntary, etc. It's wrong to force circumcision on a fully grown being.
haha. ok i dont think america should step in anything. we are already in enough crap as it is. we dont need to worry about genital mutilation. men get circumcised everday. little new born babies in america. so why should we go to africa and stop somthing that we are doing here? people in america get their things pierced everyday as well. thats mutilation. just leave it be. if they are happy i am happy also.
Female circumcision is most common in Middle Eastern areas of the world. Its primary intent is so the female will have no desire to cheat on her husband (though her husband may be a polygamist and have many wives) and she will supposedly love him more because sex isn't part of her agenda.
