Right now its summer, and I'm about to be a senior when school starts back. My biggest problems in school are dress code and discrimination. The dress code problem upsets me the most. The students shouldn't be made to wear uniforms in a public school. They say we go to school for free, but yet we have to pay school fees and other stuff. I guess that's minor, but we still have to pay. We don't get paid to go to school, but yet we have to endlessly hear from teachers how much they think we're stupid. Plus, be told what to wear. I got ISS for wearing a pair of striped stockings and refused to take them off. The ass. principal then forgot to mention to my teacher's that I was in ISS, didn't get my work sent down, and didn't let me go to lunch. And the dress code isn't the only problem. I'm bisexual and I might wanna take a girlfriend to prom. But they won't let two people of the same sex buy a couple's ticket. It's wrong. I need some opinions on how to change the dress code and the whole same sex dance tickets.

My skool is a public & we have to were uniform & i agree with ian23 if i didnt id been needing new outfits all the time but with uniform i can shake it up a bit & still make it look good for school & nicee
ie. to school we have to wear royal blue jumpers my jumper is a low cut royal blue jumper with a lovely bow on the front & that is approraite for me 2 wear to skool & still look like uniform with a twist
i would say the only problem is that female school shoes that are allowed in school are dolly shoes & as you can image my feet get soaked in the rain so only if we were allowed to trainers but that is not school uniform i dnt see how the shoes that are on your feet effect your mind & learning ablilites

You can't break the school rules about dress code then go whingeing.
It is there for a reason and it's not discriminative because they wouldn't let anyone else wear stri[y stockings either.
But the same sex tickets thing needs to be sorted out because that IS discrimination.

So basicly your saying that you dislike your school, because I found no real base, just the fact that you broke the rules and you dont like the consequences. Well, shut up. Start a petiton, rally for support. Write a letter to the principal. And not a lame whiney one like what you wrote here, make it profesional. And if they wont listen, do it again. And again. eventualy they will listen.

If your school doesn't let you take your girlfriend to school and it's a public school you could probably fight that (I think you should fight it, even). Look into it's mission statement and through your code of conduct (or hand book, or rule book) and see if there's something said about it. If there's nothing said, see if you can get something added to the statement or book saying you can't prohibit any couple buying a couple's ticket. Get a group organized, and get loud. Talking to groups in your community like PFLAG or other schools' GSAs might help, too. You could even email some people from GLSEN - they'd definitely be willing to work with you.
As for dress codes, is there the girls wear skirts boys wear slacks rule? That one always made me want to kick someone, and is definitely worth getting upset over. You can petition, start a group, and bring your issues to the school board or the superintendent. The striped stockings thing might be harder to work for, but you can always bring it up with the principal or the superintendent.

Honestly, that sounds like the school is withholding you your constitutional right of freedom of expression.

Freedom of expression? That has nothing to do with freedom of expression, unless expression of sexual attraction etc is covered under that. It just has to do with being an ass.

Honestly, that sounds like the school is withholding you your constitutional right of freedom of expression. That's not good. :-p I think you should worry more about that.

However, school uniforms are annoying but just wear it, what's the difference. Live with it. I think we're given enough luxuries in our schools to overlook the clothes that they make us wear.

Once you hit college, dress codes go bye bye...at least if you are attending a state college or a non-strict private university. At my school though, they assured us that, while we can wear anything we'd like, we need to remember that the profs we may want to wear PJ's and tube tops in front of will be writing references for us when we want jobs or grad school. So it never really ends...

(sorry about the run-on...I'm tired...)

Dress codes are fine if your school doesn't have bigger problems, but at my school, they spend more time trying to punish uniform offenders (the ones who wear a plain red shirt or something dumb - not the ones who dress like sluts) than they do punishing kids who pitch textbooks at their teacher's heads.

I'm a big fan of dress codes. The dress code at my school is not inforced at all. It's discusting(sp) what people will come to school wearing. Honestly, I think uniforms might be a welcome change at my school.

From my experience with public schools, when a teacher calls a student stupid, the student deserved it. Seriously.

My school has a uniform code. I wear it when it is in my best interests, and when it isn't, I don't wear it and take whatever they throw at me. I kind of enjoy in school suspension. I can just sit in peace and quiet and read all day. If you can't handle that, and aren't responsible enough to tell your teachers you have in-school, then just wear the damn uniform. You have one year left. Deal.

As for the bit about dance tickets, you can:
-> start a GSA if there are any like-minded people in your school and work from there to change things
-> get a bunch of people to buy single tickets to get into the prom and then pair up with the same sex to send the school a message
-> hold an alternative prom for everyone who doesn't want to deal with homophobia, or the stupidity of proms in general
-> do some research on the legality of the issue (the ACLU is always a good resource)
-> find allies outside of school to help you bring attention to the issue

That my friend is called life. You may not get paid to go to school, but you are still receiving a good education for minimal charges. If your family is deemed unable to pay those charges, they would be covered for you.

I personally support the idea of uniforms. They help level the playing field as much as possible. It just means you have to be a bit more creative in how you decide to express yourself.

As far as the whole same-sex dance tickets...I kind of know the feeling. Aside from prom, I went to all of the dances by myself, in a big group. We would have saved so much money if we were able to just pair off for the sake of buying tickets, but our school did not permit it. Even for prom, it cost the same amount whether you brought a date or not. It was like $70 per couple and $70 for a single ticket.

It seems like your school is very conservative. You can try to protest, with the knowledge that you might get in some trouble, or you can deal with it. Find ways around the dress code, buy 2 single tickets...it may suck, but that's life...
