Question:
Please answer this question honestly. How much do you cheat on tests and quizzes?

I have given answers and hints to friends on test, when asked. I have never asked or recieved answers from my friends, though. There is a large amount of cheating at my school. The most occurs in AP/honors classes too. The efforts students go to cheat is also incredible. People no longer simply ask the person sitting next to them for answers. I have known students who have written important dates on pens and placed cheat sheets in water bottles.

Choices:
I have never cheated.
I have given answers to friends but never asked for information myself.
I cheat occasionally, when I'm really stressed out.
I cheat on most tests/quizzes.

Well, this depends on several different factors. What type of cheating was it (homework, quiz, test, final exam, etc.)? Has this person cheated before? Did he cheat on the entire quiz/test/homework assignment without doing absolutely any work himself? Did he happen to have some sort of reason for cheating that could be seen as a mitigating factor?

In general, yes, I think cheaters deserve second chances to a certain extent. I think the punishment that freshman was given was extreme. For that particular incident, he should have just been given a zero. Banned from NHS and honors/AP classes is crazy. Cheating doesn't only happen in honors/AP classes, you know. And, like you said, just because he made a stupid freshman mistake, he shouldn't be given less opportunity to make up for it.

the last time a cheated was last year, and that was a stupid quiz in p.e. sometimes if my mind completly draws a blank for too long, i'll glance at the person next to me's paper so that i have some idea, and considering the people i sit near, the answer's almost always different

i guess im guilty of this. i didn't used to be but ever since my second semester this year (im in grade 12), ive cheated several times. Yes i agree cheating is a big issue in schools, but i wouldn't go as far to say that it occurs more frequently in acedemic/honour students. im pretty sure the applied students cheat just as often. maybe thats just my school but whatever. anyway i find that i cheat only in my french immersion class (i also study or review at the least for most tests), and not in my calculus or chemistry classes, because our teacher doesn't know how to teach. Basically her tests are lists of verbes and stuff taken directly out of a becherelle. she's also really stupid cuz she doesn't notice that we keep our becherelles in our laps like for the entire test (this is like half the class, not just me) i dunno basically she's just asking for us to cheat. anyway my other two classes are not too bad, cheating wise because they're are classes i need to excel in, and so i kinda need to know what im doing instead of just having the right answers. Sure cheating isn't fair to the other people who actually studied and who know what they are talking about, but its not exactly the biggest issue in the world. anyway now that i finished talking about studying/cheating let me go study for my french test tomorrow, we'll see if i can pull it off w/out cheating. lol laterSmile

When I was little, I cheated a lot, but now I try really hard not to. I go to a tiny, itsy bitsy school in the middle of nowhere, (it actually is a public school) and almost all of the kids in my class (Of which there are 12) are good students, and wouldn't help anyone cheat. A lot of the time, if I can't think of the answer to something, I'm really tempted to look at the test of the person mext to me, but I just tell myself "If I have to do that, that means I didn't study enough, and it's my fault." I think working together on busy work is fine, especially if you have a teacher like mine, that doesn't teach you anything before she gives you homework. Telling answers I think isn't the best thing you can do.

How is that just as bad? At least you're getting the answer from your own notes that you yourself copied instead of from your buddie next to you who gets nothing in return. And I rarely do this, by the way, and when I do it, I don't write every single possible thing I can on my hand---I usually write a date when an event occurred or something to that nature.

The teachers at my school still trust us to some extent. They keep their eyes on us during tests and some teachers even give out alternating tests (tests A and B) so the persons next to you would only be copying wrong answers. But they don't treat us like babies by checking our hands.

Besides, I think I'm the only one who does this. Most other people just look at a test next to them.

I've never cheated on a test or quiz. As for homework, I'll sometimes work out a plan with one or two friends (e.g. one of us will do the odd problems, one of us will do the even problems, and we'll give each other the answers), but very rarely do I just copy someone else's or let someone else copy mine.

Cheating is a huge problem, especially in the Honors/AP classes. In part, I blame the school systems for constantly reinforcing the idea that school is all about a destination rather than a journey, and in part I blame teachers for turning a blind eye toward obvious cheating. Ultimately, though, it's the kids' fault. It sickens me to see how casually cheating on tests or quizzes is viewed, and the elaborate extremes kids will go through to do it. Cheating, of course, breeds more cheating, because the more kids cheat the more other kids will have to cheat just to stay competitive.

Ultimately, there's no excuse. I understand students get very stressed and often don't have time to study, but at such times they need to cut back on extracirricular activities or work. School comes first, simple as that. If you think there's even a chance adding one more club/sport/job to your load will render you unable to study some of the time, don't add it.

Stricter penalties have to be put into action. While administering tests, teachers need to watch students like hawks. I'd support a plan in which if a student was caught cheating, that test's value would be tripled only for that student and he/she would get a 0 on it. Perhaps even that's too kind, and immediate suspension is warranted. In any case, none of this can start to happen until teachers stop turning their heads away and whistling whenever someone is cheating.

No, they haven't. I study my *** off everyday, sometimes till the wee morning hours (1-3 am). I've never needed to cheat, and I've always had incredible grades.

Apparently Celtic hasn't even done what I have done. That makes one person who hasn't cheated at all and two people who haven't asked they're neighbor for an answer.

You need a homework choice. I've never cheated on a quiz or a test by looking at someone's answers. I have occasionally (and by occasionally I mean maybe once or twice a semester and usually only in one class, most likely my hardest) cheated by writing something on my hand or on my desk. And I don't really care if others cheat off me on a quiz or test because most of the people I know wouldn't. And the kids who sit beside me who would need the help because they're failing. I used to let one of my friends cheat off me all the time in algebra last semester and last year I let someone cheat off me on the band exam (I think he may have even tipped me a dollar). It's not a big deal to me if someone who seriously doesn't know any of the material cheats but if a smart kid were to cheat off me, it would probably make me mad.

As for homework. I hardly ever cheat myself because I always do my homework. The only time I do is if I somehow forgot to do something. But I always let my friends cheat off my homework. Which gets kinda annoying after awhile just because I always do it and I don't always feel like giving someone else my work. But then I consider the fact that it doesn't really matter anyways.

You seem surprised that more cheating is going on in AP classes than regular classes. I think this makes perfect sense when you consider that AP classes are college level classes and cheating at colleges happens ALOT. I personally know a few people that basically pay other people to write papers, do math homework, and even take tests for them. It's not hard to do in a large class where the teacher only knows the star students.

well, I havent actually cheated on like a final exam, or something that counted for a huge part of my grade. But, yeah, I've cheated on a stupid quiz or test that teachers give out for nothing. I'm sorry, but no one can say that they have never cheated on a quiz (or somehting of that nature), everybody has at least asked the person next to them the answer to a question...and yeah, the movie was Perfect Score (good movie...)

It would anger me if someone was cheating on like final exams or what not, but i dont really care if its like some stupid ten point quiz you need to boost your grade. If i dont agree with what the teachers doing or why they're giving a quiz/test, and if i dont know it, i would probably cheat, but not to a great extent, i would probably just ask the person next to me, nothing major.

Never in my life have I cheated on any quiz, project, test, anything.

I have also never helped anyone cheat. IF, and only if, a friend had been going through a really stressful time and needed some help on tests, then I may help them with tutoring them myself or maybe cheating.

She actually does say specifically tests and quizzes.

I don't cheat per se, but I get help from outside sources on the take-home exams. It isn't generally accepted, but not exactly forbidden either.

I like these calm little moments before the storm.
