jen - it varies from state to state. When you get your score sheet back, there's a box up in the corner labelled "selection index" or something like that. There should be a number in that box.

Here are the cutoff rates for every state. To achieve the status of national merit scholar, your number should match or surpass that of your state cutoff rate.

Notice that the cutoff rates for the northern states are higher because that's where all the magnet schools are.
