Eh, it is college after all. We're the ones who won't be shocked when we suddenly find ourselves in hot/cold water.

There are some people I know like that. At stop and shop (where I work...), one girl works like 5 hours a week and complains about it. She also doesnt have her license because she likes her mom to drive her places and she has her private school tuition paid by her parents, but she's convinced she so independant and so amazing for having a job.

Haha...my friend's little brother will probably end up like that...he's going into his senior year of high school and his mom still has to help him start pretty much all of his projects.

I started my classes today...here's the scoop:

Business Law: Seems like a pretty interesting class. The professor scares me. He wanders around the room when he speaks and he will randomly stop in front of individuals and look them in the eye while he is speaking. This would be totally normal if he didn't stop for up to a minute at a time...it was very weird.

Accounting: The class sounds boring. The professor is a very nice younger woman who made a lot of jokes throughout the class today, it seems like it should be pretty bearable.

Spanish: It's Spanish...what is there really to say? It's the same exact class that I had last semester (split class...) and so it met my expectations.

Intro. to Law: This class is the slowest moving class I have encountered thus far. It is basically intended for people who have never even taken a high school government class. I'm one of about 5 non-freshmen in the class. We spent most of the period learning how to write a brief...which I learned how to do last semester. It's with my favorite professor, so at least I have that going for me.

Civil Liberties: The material we will cover in this class sounds more interesting than the other half of the class (that I took and rather enjoyed last semester). This one is in the same room with the same professor as my intro to law class. We went over how to do briefs in this class...and I thought it was tedious the first time...It should be pretty good once it gets going a bit. I get to skip the next week of classes, so I can't complain there. Smile

Overall, I think it should go pretty well...it was a pretty long day today, and I already have TONS to do within the next couple weeks, but I have high expectations for the semester...we shall see.

No I hear you there. I've had a ton of friends in the same position, while I'm just dumbfounded. One of my mom's friends at her work was terrible at leaving her kid alone. She would call him anywhere from 3 to 12 times a day and would come every weekend (a 3-hour drive) to see him and do laundry, and clean his room. Not only that, she made sure he was doing homework and getting up for classes. WTF?!

If you want to go into the whole independent/dependent thing...you should meet my friend.

She can't stand her family and really wants to be miss independent. So she lives on campus. Since there really aren't any nice places to work around campus, she doesn't work. Her parents pay her tuition and her room/board. She tried to get a job this summer, but none of the places that met her standards even glanced twice once they realized she would be leaving in the fall and she hadn't worked a day in her life. She is upset because her parents wouldn't buy her a car unless she got a decent paying job.

On the other hand, I contribute as much time/energy as I can around the house. I work as much as I can and put pretty much every penny into my savings account. I fork over $100 a month "rent" (aka a nominal fee to put towards my billion expenses). I pay for my own gas. This semester I paid for all of my own books.

I just smile and nod and let my friend think that she's the independent one... Wink

Eh, I know it can't be fun. Especially not being independent. But it really is what we all are, dependent. Unfortunately...

See...my thing is that I pretty much have everything paid for...by my parents.

Thus, I am totally taken care of...so long as my parents are happy.

My mom already told me that I would not remain at the school I'm at if I choose not to go to law school. Even if I suddenly decide to switch over to business completely, and then go for my MBA...she still would not pay my UDM tuition.

I always have to be pleasant. I don't often speak my mind when I disagree about something they do/say. I pretend to ask my mom's permission to go out with friends. I call her if I'm going to be home late. I'm expected to do rather a lot around the house. I jump at the opportunity to do anything that will make my mom's life easier/less stressful. Trust me on this one, being a perfect daughter is a full time job... Frown

Try $2300+ more...

The only real way my parents (may) help me out is we're going to build a barn this next summer and I might "live" in it till I pay all the loans off.

If you haven't gotten a card yet...may I recommend the Amazon student card? After your first purchase you get a free $20 gift certificate and then you earn more certificates after a certain $ amount in purchases.

This is a great reward program because it gives you certificates to help with stuff you need. (although you can still use it for stuff you want Wink) Smile

I'm pretty lucky in that I got a decent scholarship and my parents are paying the rest of my tuition. I insisted on paying for my own books this year since tuition went up again and it's costing over $1,500 MORE this year than last year...I'm expected to pay for my own grad school though, and if I don't attend grad school, I'm expected to pay back my parents for my undergrad. I am going to be paying off student loans forever...(unless I can set up a deal with a firm where they pay my tuition and I work for them upon graduation...that would work too Wink)

I'm in a similar boat, but my mom is just too cheap.

Two jobs, and mom and dad won't do that, ESPECIALLY now that there "isn't really a reason since you're not going to be earning to support a family". I'm not THAT scared though, I'm probably going to have to get one so I can pay for a snowboard when the time comes... Wink

Scared of credit cards?

If you don't pay them off at the end of the month...they can get pretty darn scary.

Books are pretty necessary though...if there is one thing credit card debt can be justified for, I would think it was that.

YOU CAN'T JUST PAY THE MINIMUM BALANCE AT THE END OF THE MONTH. It takes like 50 years or something crazy like that to pay it off that way. Just pay as much as you can bear to part with at the end of the month and hope for the best.

Your best bet would probably be to hit up mom and dad for a loan...or find a job on campus...

You really ought to consider buying books online FOD...it saves SOOOOO much money. For example, my accounting book was sold used at the bookstore for $141 and I bought it new online for $45. My spanish book last semester was $60 at the bookstore and $2.40 online.

Indeed... maybe put it on a credit card. Though they scare the shit outta me...

MY BOOK CAME IN THE MAIL!!!!!!!

*dances around the entire NEIGHBORHOOD*

Okay...I can breathe now. Smile

As long as you plan ahead and order your books more in advance than I did with my accounting book (if I had continued waiting for my prof to e-mail me back, I STILL wouldn't know what book to order...this is not going to be a good semester...) then you shouldn't have any problems.

I ordered all of my books online this term, aside from my idiotic accounting book, I was able to find out the ISBNs for all of them and order them early in the summer. This not only made me feel very prepared for next term, but ordering them before the back-to-school rush allowed me to get the cheapest copies out there. Smile

Three hardcovers, one of the heaviest paperbacks I've ever seen and my tiny little paperback Spanish book, that when folded in half would probably fit in my back pocket. I have no idea what I'm doing about a bag this year...I have a business tote, but my books won't all fit in it. Hmm...

Actually I remember a lot of that shite happening last year... I'm glad for the most part that I don't do it that way, though I may quickly be changing my mind about that since I won't have as much money (student loans completely on tuition now, couldn't get any more).

Had he done so, I would have it by now and I would be much more relaxed about the upcoming semester than I am right now.

We started classes two weeks ago and two kids in my lit class are still waiting for the books they ordered.

I hear you Meagan... I'm going to do things online for next semester as long as I have a list to go by but I'll probably have to do it on credit or something unless I work my butt off over the break. But you're right, reselling for more than you paid works out. Smile

I ordered my textbook...I got it brand new for super cheap. (so that I can sell it for more...)

How annoying that people are incapable of sending things out on time...I bought it on Saturday and it WAS NOT put into the mail on Monday.

Had he done so, I would have it by now and I would be much more relaxed about the upcoming semester than I am right now. Grr...

My name is Adrienne and I'm a sophomore at Western Kentucky University. I am a double major in music education and French. The reason I chose Western is because of the campus, the hill which is great for cardio workout, the music department and the overall friendliness of the campus.

It was so easy to become involved on campus. I'm a Western Representative for my high school and surrounding area, an Alumni Leadership Scholar, involved in all the music ensembles and involved at the Newman Center.

I love Western it is far away from home (3.5) hours that allows me to be more independent but still able to go home when I want too.
Not sure what else to write
