I think it depends on your high school experience.

Well, yeah, I think it does depend. But, at least in my experience, I went through high school thinking it wasn't easy. I took some AP and PSEO classes and thought those were difficult as well. And then I went to college. Even though high school wasn't a breeze, I never had to read an entire textbook, or even 8 books for just one class. I also never had to take 3 hour lab classes. Or realize that 80% of my final grade could depend on 2 tests. College is extremely different than high school. Maybe this isn't the case for everyone, but the majority of people I know (who happen to be in college) have said the same thing.

I admit, when I was going to high school, I thought it was difficult at the time. But now I know, that if I could take those same high school classes now, that I could ace them with hardly any effort. College is just way more intense and fast-paced and the work-load is much heavier.
Maybe it's just me, but high school just doesn't even compare...

Yeah, FOD, my advice is to pick something you enjoy as your major, and then supplement it with one, two, or even three minors...unless you pick something science related you should be able to fit it into your schedule. I had to take on minors, even though I am very confident that I won't be changing my mind...I initially was going to be a pre-law student (basically a minor at my school) majoring in political science. However, you can't really do anything with a political science degree if you don't want to go into law, so i added a double minor in Spanish (a beginner and advanced certificate) and a minor in business administration. AND I'll be done in four years...I could have done it in 3.5, but I chose not to for law school purposes...

Well high school wasn't a joke for me...I was in a heavy duty 2 hour global education class which I had to work my butt off in, two AP classes (calc and bio), economics and spanish second semester senior year. I had hours of homework every night.

Second semester this past year (my fresh year) was SOOOOO nice. I had most of my core classes. My one class with all the homework was the super easy one (statistics) and the class that I was going to drop because I was convinced I was in over my head had hardly any homework (Constitutional Law). And I ended up with 4 A's and 1 A-...not bad at all.

I just realized that if you only need 6 honors classes total, then WHY ON EARTH would they recommend that incoming freshman take the two hardest ones in one semester. Although now, everything suddenly seems MUCH easier...

That's exactly the situation I'm in freedom. I suggest narrowing your interests down to two subjects and then taking the majority of your classes in those. That way, if you don't want to major in one of them, you could always minor in it.

Well, I have a story, as some YNers already know.

Back in January a few friends of mine and a few of their friends started a Tae Kwon Do club (Korean martial arts). Then, in March, we were doing a different kind of high kicks in the squash courts (which is basically a basketball-court-like flooring, slippery when wet). Of course, I am an idiot and ended up on the ground, bleeding profusely from my head. It was a very small cut, where my skull had literally cut through the skin when it hit the floor *just the right angle!!!* and I had to get stitches and crap... Oh what a night.

As for classes, I'm not doing bad, but wish I was doing better. I still don't know what I want to major in, but I will need to decide very quickly, or I will end up spending the last two years solely on my major.

I agree...the first semester of your freshman year is a huge surprise. You realize what a joke high school was.

And try to go especially light when you are taking a philosophy class...bleh, my school makes us take 3 semesters of it. It's been pretty painful so far. I'm not sure I'll be making it out alive.

Not really...I got something in the mail today that started out "Dear University of Detroit Mercy Graduate," and then proceeded to tell me how wonderful it is that I got my degree and that they were enclosing a copy of my transcript for my records, and how excited they were to have me joining their alumni base. I am starting my sophomore year in September...

What it was is that I got my Certificate in Language Studies I (kind of like a minor in Spanish...) and since they are making up a certificate for me, my name ended up with the commencement stuff...

Advice to incoming freshmen: don't take 2 honors classes your first semester, especially if one of them is a horrid subject (philosophy) and the other is writing intensive...I did that and I was in tears almost every night.

I go to Rosedale technical institute, not so much college as it is a Trade School, but it is secondary education so it counts

....I want to still do marching band in college.

I am a big college football and basketball fan.

I hate UNC with a passion.

You must have school spirit or marching band is no fun.

Therefore I cannot go to UNC.

Yeah...I know it seems like such a lame reason to not choose that as a school. But I am getting angry now just thinking about that gross baby blue....I'm not even kidding. I don't know where it stems from but all I know is there's no way I won't march in college and there is no way I can march in Carolina blue.

23k actually isnt that bad but a rise of tuition always sucks.

I know for a private university 23K isn't that bad, but the only reason I went private in the first place was because I got so much in scholarships from them that there was little difference between UDM and any state university. When tuition was only 21.5, it only cost my parents 6.5K, now it is going up to 8K. Considering U of M, which was my first choice before I found UDM, was only 6.5K (which, after my puny $1000 scholarship was 5.5K), it is a pretty significant cost for my fam...

Exactly. It's not practical. My parents don't know about the increase yet. Oh! And I found out tuition-per-student is going up $355 for PRINTING purposes - OUR, the STUDENTS, printing! I HIGHLY doubt I print that much. Bull. Shit.

Yeah, my school just raised tuition from 21.5K to 23K. One of the reasons for the raise? They are giving more scholarships. My parents are pretty POed, I convinced them to let me go to UDM because, based on my scholarships from each place (Uof M only gave me 1K) it would cost less than $1000 more. Now however, my out of pocket cost just keeps going up and up...

I gotta get my parents to go yell at the financial aide office, they could care less when students go to complain...

What I don't like about renewable scholarships is that they don't increase like tuition-increases. It's bull. But better than nothing, Modef. I am getting a 8K scholarship for my GPA and SAT scores and then a 15K grant for my leadership ability and community service, though instead of the 8K scholarship I could have gotten 12K if I had entered for another community service scholarship with my grades. I would have barely anything to pay for with that combination, because I have about 2K in other scholarships I can get through my town.
