Hey everybody My name's Krystal go to university of tx at san antonio. I picked it because it was cheaper than the private ones in san antonio, I thought it would be close to my old friends in my hometown (guess I was wrong there), and my mom moved to SA when I graduated from high school so it's rent/bill free... it's pretty good here, I mean I love Texas. I think it's the best state (sorry I've been to/lived in 12 but it just rocks the most). The only thing that really sucks is I'm pretty shy. It took a long time for me to make friends in high school, and I saw them everyday. Now it feels almost impossible. A few people from my high school came here but most of them are transferring to the main Austin campus next fall, plus they have their own lives and everything. If I did transfer it'd be to austin too because, well, the horns are the best. Yeah it would have to take a lot to get me from free everything to paying for the higher cost of living at the same pay in Austin. Any advice I would give is just not to be afraid to commit yourself, to love, to groups, to clubs, to sororities/fraternities, to whatever makes you happy. Life's just really too short to stand by the sidelines and watch everyone else have a great time.

I was talking just about Princeton, but yes, that may be true for some kinds. But I find the SparkNotes one to be right on.

It's not so much a bias as that colleges will pay to get on the list and there are tons of tricks that colleges go thru to get so they look better then they actually are.

Well, nothing is significantly different, but the lists are skewed from what I perceive to be a bias.

No, unfortunately not.. but that's still more than me. My school offered 3 APs and 4 college-credit (through the high school) and I had 3 college credits and had only taken 1 AP (but failed miserably). Damn stupid decisions not to take AP English....

Don't worry about it, tough. Especially at this point.... :-p I don't agree that the Princeton Review is unbiased. I know that they disagree, and yes, part of it is because it's named after the school, but their lists are a little screwy. I would recommend the collegeboard or maybe even sparknotes. Sparknotes definitely has some good information on colleges, especially with the little labels it has, like "Big Idea", "Big Fish" and more. That's cool Celtic... I wish I had a college nearer to me. I was talking to this junior the other day here who is a prospective and she's already taken 11 college courses...ALONG with high school... Talk about an early start! That's really cool that you have those kind of opportunities.

I was in a highschool where you could basically pick your classes...for example: - For an English class, you could pick: - World Literature - English Literature - Grammar - Old English - Writing - Etc. The school's flexibilty allowed you to take some classes out of the school itself (I took a few language classes in a university), but they were included in your normal class schedule as well, but counted for college too. It was complicated. I don't know if it's common in the US; I live in Puerto Rico.

Ooh. Really? Does he have a SN or a myspace? Tell him to join the Bowdoin 2010 myspace group.

Well, I did a highschool and college at the same time thing. I love college because...obviously I feel like an adult. Profesors don't bitch at me if I cut class or don't take notes or something. Also, the people are much calmer and mature than those in HS, and I like it that I'm not surrounded by the same people all day.

TS, look at Northwestern, Oberlin, University of Chicago, Macalester, and Carleton. I will attending Bowdoin College in Maine next year. I picked Bowdoin because of its outstanding academic reputation. It was perfect for me in just about every respect. Also, check out http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/. It is forums (like Youthnoise) for high school students, parents, and college students.

I suggest looking on www.princetonreview.com. They have a survey which will suggest colleges and give you profiles. i don't think you need one amp. "You learn about equality in the classroom but you find out about it in life" - Campus Confidential www.myspace.com/yogore

I'm a junior and could use some serious college advice. I get tons of letters from colleges a day. Today I even got offered 1000 to go to some random business college. I'm a pretty good student. like a 3.96 GPA, I am the captain of the debate team and have qualed twice for nationals. I play the cello, and do some volunteer work. I've taken mostly AP classes and will take two PSEO classes next year. I actually could graduate at the end of this year, or basically any time I want to. I think I could probably graduate right now if I wanted too. So where should I go?!?! I know I want to go to somewhere small, in the midwest, and in a larger town like Chicago or Minneapolis. I want it to be a private college, and I want there to be a decent policy debate team. I don't know what I will major in b/c I have this problem that I'm good at everything. What should I major in and where should I go?!?! Sorry, FOD, I'm posting on your college only board. I hope you can forgive me. I've gotten letters and emails from Clark, it looks like a really nice. Place, but too far away from here I think.

So apparently not a lot of people are going to do this.. Probably because not many people on YN go to college, but oh well. Most of the ones that do have left, like I did once. So here's the scoop on myself: I go to Clark University in Massachusetts. I picked Clark mostly because it had dwindled down to two schools in the last week I had in order to enroll the following year (schools require notification, most by May 1st). I picked it because of it's academic reputation and expansive programs, its financial package was unbeatable, and the student life fit me very well. I love Clark. I believe I made the best decision possible for myself because I feel accepted here, for the most part. It is one of the most open schools I had visited, and that didn't change once I stayed here a while. It's also got a great faculty and staff that are really into teaching (always a plus). I might consider transferring if it was for free, and it had very comparable qualities to Clark. The best thing about Clark is its people. The teachers, the students, the staff... It's diverse, very free-spirited, has a great balance of academic vigor and ability to have fun and it's very community-based. As for college in general, not having to worry about parents checking in on you 24/7 is a big plus, even if you get homesick from time to time. I'm doing pretty well here. I wasn't originally; it was a tough transition as a first-generation college student, and the first born. There has been a lot of pressure and the fact that I'm dealing with my sexual orientation while in the closet definitely doesn't make the whole experience better. But it could be worse, and I have good grades, lots of friends and I am pretty involved on campus, so it's a good life overall. My goal is to get at least a Master Degree, but I haven't even picked a major yet. I know I want to do Pre-Law, and I'm probably going to major in Communication and Culture (AKA Communications) and maybe a minor in either Sociology or Education. I certainly don't know about a master's program yet, but I'm thinking of Education or Public Administration. I would like to go to Law school, but we'll see. I would advise the YNers to live in high school. Live it up, at least the end of your career. That would be my regret - I was WAY too strict on myself in my senior year. I'm not saying go all out and be wild, but give yourself some slack - you deserve it, and colleges won't care a whole lot if your grades slide a letter, especially if they are high-level classes. And good luck!
